Nielsen has been measuring television audiences for decades. Now online TV is starting to take over—but do we have accurate measurement of the online TV audience?
Nielsen Enhances Online Measurement Panel
Nielsen has announced the launch of an expanded panel and platform for measuring Internet audiences.
The new panel increases Nielsen’s measurement of websites from 3,00 to more than 30,000, providing better representation of Hispanic, teens, and cell phone only households, and improves coverage of multiple PCs in households.
Nielsen: The Rise and Rise of Power Moms
The power of mommy bloggers continues to gain momentum. At least that’s what recent research from Nielsen Online appears to show.
According to Nielsen, the number of “Power Moms” online is rising (pdf). Identified as those women aged between 25 and 54 with at least one child and who regularly participate in online activities, this segment now accounts for almost 20% of the active online population.
Nielsen Statistics Called Into Question Again
Along with what comScore and Hitwise put out, Nielsen’s data concerning online traffic is often viewed as being rather reliable, and almost every month, loads of people turn to it to see how different sites stack up. A couple of rather important companies have recently called into question the accuracy of Nielsen’s stats, however.
Nielsen: Twitter’s Audience Retention Rate Sucks
Getting someone’s attention can be difficult these days; people have so many interests and so little time that convincing them to swing by a website can count as a real victory. Unfortunately for Twitter, it’s also important to keep people around, and in this respect, statistics indicate that the micro-blogging service is failing rather miserably.

Nielsen Looks at Traffic to Medical Sites
People often turn to the Internet for information about illnesses and treatments. Many put off going to the doctor as long as possible just because they don’t find it enjoyable. Many others simply can’t afford to go to the doctor because of a lack of health insurance or plans that still end up costing them too much in co-pays anyway.
Nielsen on the Increase of Online News Readership
Just after examining one print publisher’s idea that staying away from the web would be in the best interest for his business, I came across a post on the Nielsen Online Blog indicating that going online is the key to print media’s survival.
Nielsen Looks at Online Retail Category Performance
Nielsen is sharing some interesting data today regarding online retail web traffic during the holiday season. This data shows that both Black Friday and Cyber Monday traffic were up by 10% each when compared to last year.
Nielsen: People Watching More TV Than Ever
Americans are gluing themselves to the screen more and more. That includes TV, Internet, and Mobile. According to research from Nielsen, as of the third quarter 2008, the average person in the U.S. watched approximately 142 hours of TV in one month. In addition, people who used the Internet were online 27 hours a month, and people who used a mobile phone spent 3 hours a month watching mobile video.
