TEC International just concluded their 2002 first-quarter survey of 6,000 CEOs of small-to-midsize companies. Most are, in Greenspan’s words, “cautiously optimistic.” According to BusinessWeek, this is what they found:

As we all know, running a small business can be both challenging and rewarding. Most of us are in it for just these reasons but sometimes we get in over our heads when it comes to legal matters.
It may not seem quite fair to us but the complexities of running a small business are complicated by the legal requirements that stem from taxes, incorporation, employee management, workman’s compensation, OSHA, business licenses, local ordinances, etc. These legalities must be dealt with and they must conform to existing statutes. Language changes through usage — definitions, spelling, grammar — and authors can help it do this. But on the other hand, we have to have some sort of agreement on the language or we won’t be able to talk to each other.
