Online Jewelry Sales Rose 20 Percent In 2006
Online jewelry sales in the U.S. market hit $2.45 billion in 2006, an increase of 20 percent from 2005, according to data from IDEX Online Research. Online sales comprised 3.9 percent of all jewelry sales of $63.0 billion in 2006.
The conventional wisdom at the start of e-commerce was that online sales of jewelry would never be a major factor. Online shoppers now buy a wide range of merchandise online besides books and CDs. They also spend more per purchase.
Historic American Newspapers Move Online
If you are an American History buff you will be interested to know that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress has announced that "Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers" is available online.
The site has more than 226,000 pages of public domain newspapers from California, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, Virginia and Washington DC published between 1900 and 1910. The text of the newspapers is searchable, and search terms can focus on a single state, newspaper, year and months.
CBS Buys Online Sports Network
The CBS Corporation has purchased the online high school sports network MaxPreps. The company will become part of CBS owned CSTV (College Sports Television). The site focuses on stats, stories, photos and videos of athletes and coaches. Brian Bedol, President and CEO of CSTV Networks made the announcement.

A piece from the New York Times has reignited the debate over online advertising and the monetization of the “long tail” of the Web, one that got a boost recently with a post from Jeremy Liew, a venture capitalist at Lightspeed Venture Partners, who noted that in order to build a business with $50-million in revenue — pretty small beer in most circles — a site would have to have about gazillion page views a month (I’m rounding up).

Hotel Online Marketing
In order to compete with online travel agencies, hotels have begun to shift their money into online marketing according to a study by Hospitality eBusiness Strategies. The global study found that 68 percent of hospitality executives plan to focus their budgets on Internet marketing in 2007.
When it came to what hotel executives thought would bring them the greatest return on investment 72 percent said Web site optimization. This was followed by 68 percent who said search optimization and organic search, while 62 person favored Web site redesign.
