TRUSTe has released the results of its analysis of the privacy practices of the largest brands in the US, and found that eBay is the most trusted company. Other web brands in the top ten include WebMD, Yahoo, and Facebook. Interestingly enough, Google didn’t crack the list.

Nielsen released some interesting findings from a study (pdf) on consumer trust and advertising. The most important takeaway is that consumer opinions posted online are the most trusted forms of advertising globally.
Right off the bat, this tells me that:
Online news sites are now second only to recommendations from friends as the most trusted source of information in the U.S., according to a survey from TNS.
In the U.S. 38 percent of those surveyed cited online news as the most trusted source of information, while 34 percent trusted newspapers and 33 percent TV news.
Globally, the most trusted information source was friends, with 42 percent of those surveyed saying they trusted word-of-mouth recommendations. Almost an equal number trusted TV news (41%), online news (40%) and newspapers (39%).
eBay recently announced a change to product pages for books, music, movies, and video games last week – a change that will likely give sellers yet another reason to complain.
Consumer-generated content is by far a more trusted form of advertising worldwide than search engine ads, banner ads, or text ads, according to Nielsen, and is trusted almost as much as physical word-of-mouth.
