In Tuesday’s issue we looked at Google predictions for 2004. As we all know, Google’s not the only search engine, and those of us whose rankings dropped after the Florida update learned that it’s not profitable to expect traffic from Google.
First of all, what type of keywords should you optimize for? A single word, a whole sentence. The actual question is what are people searching for? Here is a breakdown of the most popular type of searches.
Reader Question: I am a member of a group of small B&B’s (bed and breakfasts) who are planning to develop a “brand” for our district [something along the lines of “country hospitality on the coast”] We are interested in finding out what key phrases would be the most popular search terms used by our potential guests. We’ve collected customer profile data on our existing guests to establish the demographics of the target markets that we are aiming for. Now we would like to determine the best key phrases before registering a business name and deciding on a Web site URL etc. I’ve tested WebPosition Gold 2 but it only seems to operate with an existing site. Is there a way to do this with WP Gold 2 or is there another tool for this purpose?
Reader Question: I’ve been told that I should put my navbar (navigation bar) on the right side of my Web site (or use a table trick to get the same effect) so search engine spiders will read my title and text first, and the navbar last. Is that necessary for optimum search engine positioning?
Are You Addicted to Google? Go ahead, admit it. You’re an addict, too. This morning at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago, Danny Sullivan gave a Keynote speech titled “Google Anonymous” — the joke is many people seem to be addicted to Google. Danny is considered one of the most prominent search engine marketing experts in the world. He offered a step-by-step process to help people overcome this “addiction.”
Pay-per-click search engines are backward.
– Your site is listed in the search results according to pertinent keywords and key phrases, but those have nothing to do with the rank or position of your listing.
That’s pay per ‘click’ . . . meaning that you pay only when a visitor clicks through from the search engine listing to your site. The concept is rather simple. You buy or ‘bid’ on keywords and search terms that relate to your product, and in return you receive targeted traffic to your website. Oftentimes, relevant terms are available for just a few pennies per click.
