Online news sites are now second only to recommendations from friends as the most trusted source of information in the U.S., according to a survey from TNS.
In the U.S. 38 percent of those surveyed cited online news as the most trusted source of information, while 34 percent trusted newspapers and 33 percent TV news.
Globally, the most trusted information source was friends, with 42 percent of those surveyed saying they trusted word-of-mouth recommendations. Almost an equal number trusted TV news (41%), online news (40%) and newspapers (39%).
Good Online Experience Leads To More Donations For Nonprofits
Visitors to nonprofit websites are more likely to donate money, volunteer time, and recommend the nonprofit to others if they have a good online experience, according to a new study from ForeSee Results.
Nonprofit websites score 73 on the study’s 100-point scale, below many other online industries, including online banking (83), e-retail (74), e-government (74) and automotive websites (78).
Newspapers Best Opportunity Is Online
As the newspaper industry continues to struggle its best opportunity is online, according to a new annual survey by the Center for the Digital Future at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication.
The survey found that Internet users read online newspapers for 53 minutes per week, the highest level seen so far. In contrast, Internet users in 2007 spent 41 minutes per week.
The survey also found that 22 percent of Internet users stopped their subscriptions to a printed newspaper or magazine because they could access the same content online.
McAfee Rolls Out Free Online Cybercrime Site
McAfee has introduced a free online Cybercrime Response Unit aimed at detecting cybercrime and helping users recover from it.
"With physical crime you know right away if your house has been broken into or your car has been stolen, but with cybercrime, it’s not that obvious. Most people don’t even know they’re a victim, and they rarely know what to do next," said McAfee President and Chief Executive Officer Dave DeWalt.
Symantec Launches Online Safety Service For Parents And Kids
Symantec has officially launched OnlineFamily.Norton, an Internet safety service designed to help parents monitor their children’s online activity.
The launch coincides with the start of Internet Safety Week, which began today. The service is available for free until January1, 2010.
Online Newspaper Traffic Up 10 Percent
While the newspaper industry continues to struggle, one bright spot is online visitors to newspaper Web sites increased 10.5 percent in the first quarter of 2009 attracting an average of 73.3 million monthly unique visitors, according to a report from Nielsen Online commissioned by the Newspaper Association of America.
Social Media And Video Lead To Increased Online Engagement
Online engagement by Internet users is increasing in part as a result of a shift toward video content and social networking, according to a new report by Nielsen.
Since 2003, interests of the average online user have shifted significantly. Categories that consisted of portal-oriented browsing sites, such as shopping directories and Internet tools/Web services, used to be the most popular categories for user engagement.
Online Video Popular In Canada
In February 21 million Canadians viewed more than 3.1 billion videos online, according to a new report from comScore Video Metrix.
The average Canadian online video viewer spent 10 hours viewing videos in February, an increase of 53 percent from their average viewing time last year.
"Canada’s high broadband penetration and tech savvy Internet users make it an optimal environment for online video to flourish," said Bryan Segal, vice president of sales, comScore Canada.
