Here are Shari’s 5 Basic Rules of Web Design:

I remember my very first website. I thought it was the most amazing thing ever created; it had Flash, Javascript, an animated graphic I designed all on my own, plus various bits of ‘artwork’ placed at strategic locations throughout the site. Plus it used frames, something I thought would ease navigation for my visitors. What an astonishing display of talent!
I couldn’t find any “meaty” questions for this issue, so I thought I’d just talk generally about what makes a site “crawler-friendly.” I used to call this “search-engine-friendly” but my friend Mike Grehan convinced me that the more accurate phrase was “crawler-friendly” because it’s the search engine crawlers (or spiders) that your site needs to buddy-up to, as opposed to the search engine itself.
One of the things I do every year is serve as a judge at History Day, an annual celebration of history and the study of such in the lives of middle school/junior high school and high school students. This year, for the first time, all of the students said that the Internet gave them the most help finding information.
Reading from a computer screen is uncomfortable, so users may often want to print the page they’re viewing. The problem is that web pages don’t usually lend themselves to print.
Project into the near future and envision a time with “real time” checking – when merchants have the ability to know if the customer has sufficient funds in his/her banking account to cover costs. Like a debit card, the check amount will be immediately debited and transferred. Merchants espouse this new way of doing business, no longer assuming a risk with each check transaction.
You can create a website that attracts customers, not repels them, with a little common sense advice.
