Murdoch Would Bolster WSJ’s Digital Presence

The letter has it all – bold print, bullet points, and italics.  It’s 1,200 words long.  And it’s signed by billionaire Rupert Murdoch.  That’s right – Murdoch’s most recent communication regarding a Dow Jones takeover has been published by The Wall Street Journal, a Dow Jones property.

Which may not have been what the billionaire intended.  “We are disappointed, as I imagine you are, that the details of our proposal and the discussion of the merits of a potential combination have become a matter of public debate,” he wrote to the Bancroft family (which owns Dow Jones).  Yet the letter was unfailingly courteous, and modesty ruled the day.

Labels to Sell Digital Music Directly to Fans

IODA, a digital distribution company for the independent music community, has announced a new service, which will allow independent record, labels to sell digital music directly to consumers on label and artist Web sites.
The company has partnered with DownloadCentric to offer the service to its label, distributor and artist clients. They will use the platform to create customized storefronts, which will facilitate direct-to- fan sales.

Skirmish in the Digital Media War

A major kerfuffle has broken out in the UK between Virgin Media and satellite broadcaster BSkyB, with customers of both services losing out as the ham in the metaphorical sandwich.
At midnight last night, a deadline expired for both companies to come to an agreement on licensing rights and fees for Virgin to include some of Sky’s content in the range of TV channels included in Virgin’s cable service.

Hearst and Microsoft Make Print Digital

Newspaper giant Hearst Corporation unveiled its News Reader software, a product born of a partnership with Microsoft. News Reader software debuted in beta at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as a downloadable application, allowing an on-screen view of Hearst newspapers.

The news comes in the wake of growing concern for the future of print media as online content becomes more prevalent and preferred.

WebSideStory’s Digital Marketing University

WebSideStory’s Digital Marketing University (DMU) is just around the corner in March – and I’m going to be teaching two classes this time. I’ll be doing a hands-on class on Functionalism – which I hope would be useful to almost any web analytics practitioner.

In addition, I’ll be doing a class on advanced Visitor Segmentation in Visual Science. That’s obviously a deep-dive class – and it should be a lot of fun.
