AT&T Concessions Prove Meaningless
Remember how after AT&T made Net Neutrality concessions to get their merger with BellSouth approved, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin was so quick to remind everybody that the FCC had no teeth to enforce that? Well, the lack of teeth is coming back to bite us.Let’s review. At the end of 2006, Martin had this to say about making sure AT&T followed it’s own commitment to maintaining a neutral network:
Pageflakes Has Been Working within Social & Education
Below is an update on what Pageflakes has been working on within the topics of social and education. First some background on Pageflakes
Network Solutions to Change Front-Running Practice
As we reported yesterday, Network Solutions has been in a lot of deep-water after many people discovered the company was guilty of "front-running"–the practice of registering a domain name after someone has checked on its availability.
More and More People Turning to Online Video
We appear to have two data points related to online video that are worth paying attention to. Number one: According to the BBC, Nielsen says that traffic to some online video sites has doubled since the Hollywood writers’ strike in October turned the TV into a wasteland of reruns and unfunny late-night talk shows (although it may be stretching things to call the Nielsen figure a data point, since I can’t find a report that has those numbers in it).
How Blogs Influence The Media
Blogs have an impact not only on the speed and availability of the news, but also shape the tone and editorial direction of reporting a survey of U.S. journalists by Brodeur finds.
Blogs are a regular source for journalists with more than three quarters viewing blogs as helpful in giving them story ideas, story angles and insight into the tone of an issue. Almost 70 percent of all reporters check a blog list on a regular basis. Twenty percent said they spend more than an hour per day reading blogs. Fifty-seven percent said they read blogs two to three times a week.
Network Solutions Backs Down, A Little
After a fiery uproar, Network Solutions (NetSol) is backing down some from the recently instituted practice of automatically registering domains customers search for on the company’s site. If available, NetSol would hold the domain for four days and sell it for $34.99.
Mozilla’s Marketing Misfire
Mozilla, makers of the Firefox browser (my preferred browser due to the amazing plugins) wants to lure Internet Explorer users. They have a new marketing campaign that hasn’t gone over so well. The theme of the campaign is Fight Against Boredom, suggesting that IE is a boring option. Here’s a line to give you the idea of the 70s goofy feel of the campaign’s song (Rise Up! Rise Up!). The world is such a great big place with so much to do. You can ski, eat green eggs, ride bikes, or start a coupe.
Yahoo Mail Socializing All About The Money
Company CEO Jerry Yang told CES 2008 attendees Yahoo Mail would become a much more socially aware application, able to tap into multiple social networks.
FCC At Center Of Net, Media Controversy
Net neutrality concepts, and media ownership rules, have the Federal Communications Commission and its chairman, Kevin Martin, at the epicenter of how people will get the content they want.
