Jon Udell and His Value to Microsoft
Today Jon Udell is showing you how to blog from Word 2007.
Yes, my Google Reader is working again (it was a munged up Firefox cache or something).
But, anyway, this is something I’ve noticed since leaving Microsoft. When you’re up at Microsoft all you think about is how to work with Microsoft stuff. Conversations like the one Jon is participating in seem normal and commonplace.
Social Networking: Redux
Sites like Stumbled Upon, Digg, Reddit, and others might drive traffic, but the issues remain the same, who is really clicking on those recommendations?
Citizen Journalism, Blogging, Web 2.0, Democracy Player and management systems, Podcasts, and the whole host of other systems that we use to communicate with each other also drive other social issues and concerns.
Google SEO
Often times we are asked how we optimize for one search engine (Google) and expect to rank well for the other two engines (Yahoo! and MSN). This question is usually followed up with “do you guys create different doorway pages for each keyword, that is optimized for each algorithm?”.
Tom Blue – A Webinar Use Case
Tom Blue writes a blog called Marketing Revisited ("Lessons and Observations from the Marketing Trenches"). Last week he wrote a piece entitled "Harness the Market-making Power of Webinars." In his entry, he talked about how he had paid no attention to webinars until he was invited to be a presenter with Research In Motion (aka RIM… the company that makes the ubiquitous BlackBerry handheld communications device).
What is Wrong with Social Media?
Over the last few days, there have been several discussions around Social Media and social media tools, with discussions ranging from its definition and intent, to its manipulation by marketers and whether it needs to be reclassified as something else.
Science and Marketing
Without marketing great ideas go nowhere. Google’s Larry Page recently stated:
"Virtually all economic growth (in the world) was due to technological progress. I think as a society we’re not really paying attention to that," Page said. "Science has a real marketing problem. If all the growth in world is due to science and technology and no one pays attention to you, then you have a serious marketing problem."
Infosec and Corporate Blogging
Zeltzer and Villafranco have probably the most coherent list of Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to corporate blogging out there, its an absolute must read.
The Law.com has a great listing of Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to Corporate Blogging out there. Here are two don’ts that I have seen in a lot of corporate blogs that defy the imagination for being out there.
Unique Meta Descriptions
Some time back we reported Google’s Advice: Use Meta description Tag. A Search Engine Watch Forums thread intricately expounds the importance of meta description.
Whenever for a site: command you see this
‘In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 1 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included’
Google News Trails BBC, Yahoo News In The UK
The home field advantage paid off: according to the latest data from comScore, the BBC website receives more visitors than Google News in the UK. For that matter, Yahoo News also ranked higher than Google News, by a margin of about 900,000 people.
Woe is Google, huh? In terms of numbers, it’s not even close to the top of the news site pile, and in terms of brand name, it has some less-than-distinguished company.
EBay Lets Britney’s Hair Down
The phrase "only in America" has never been more apropos. And the phrase "Britney shaved" has never had such an ironic connotation. And eBay has never been quicker to remove a listing (can’t really back up that last part).
