YouTube Financial Woes Aren’t As Bad As First Indicated

Back in April, Credit Suisse issued a report stating that YouTube stood to lose $470M this year. But now it looks like the financial services company was overly pessimistic (and, really, they’re probably just used to that, with the economy the way it is). New estimates from research company RampRate puts the losses for the most popular video website in the world far more conservatively:

YouTube Drives Surge In Online Video Viewing

Americans viewed a record 16.8 billion videos online in April, a 16 percent increase over March, according to new data from comScore.
A surge in video viewing at YouTube during April contributed to the month’s significant gains.
Google sites were once again the most popular property with 6.8 billion videos viewed (40.7 percent online video market share), a 15 percent increase over March. YouTube accounted for more than 99 percent of all videos viewed at the property.

YouTube Set To Debut Movie

YouTube is set to premiere Luc Besson’s new movie, the first time a film debuts both online and in theaters.
The move by YouTube is part of its strategy to boost ad sales and reach profitability. The Google owned property will premiere "Home" tomorrow, a movie about the environment produced by Besson, who has previously directed "The Fifth Element," "Nikita" and "Leon."

TV Still Video King, YouTube Still Hulu’s Daddy

According to Nielsen, almost 99 percent of the video watched in the US is on a television. That leaves 1.1 percent for the Internet, and 0.1 percent on mobile devices.

In fact, though video viewing online and on mobile is increasing dramatically, neither medium is taking away from TV. Americans are actually watching more TV than ever and just adding online viewing to their schedules.

That’s bad news for gyms, eh?
