I’m in an awards mood today, and it’s almost time to reflect on 2008 as we head barreling into 2009. The New York Times blogged about a company’s quest (great PR move by Sawhorse Media) to find the best tweeters of the year. The awards are called the Shorty Awards, and it’s a hot topic on Twitter. Over 12,000 entries have come in already.
Tweets Of Remembering 9/11
Today is the anniversary of 7 years since 9/11 and there are signs all over that it is happening with a new memorial in DC being dedicated today and radio shows and TV programs all talking about the same thing here in the US. One of the most powerful commemorations is a meme that started up on Twitter and has been happening all day where people are taking 140 characters to share their simple stories of where they were 7 years ago when 9/11 happened.
AMC Gets Mad at Mad Men Tweets
AMC (American Movie Classics) has a show called "Mad Men" about an ad agency in the 60s. Some people like this show so much that they create fictional profiles on Twitter and pretend to be characters. AMC caught wind of this and decided it wasn’t too thrilled.
Loose Tweets Sink Fleets, Congressman
US Representative John Culberson (R-TX) tweeted loudly in the spirit of Paul Revere: "They want to require prior approval of all posts to any public social media/internet/www site by any member of Congress!!!"

Popular people with long lists of followers on Twitter may be partly responsible for the micro-blogging site’s performance woes at times.
