Original Article: Facebook announced a new feature today, which allows users to tag their friends in their status updates and other posts from the publisher. Previously, you could only tag friends in photos, videos, and notes.
Consumers are sharing best-of-Web content with bookmarking and tagging sites like Del.icio.us and StumbleUpon. Flickr, YouTube and Technorati tap into "tagging" to categorize material, so people interested in topics can locate community finds. I’m probably a typical web user. Whenever I see a website page or a blog post that has something interesting, I’ll bookmark it in Firefox (or add it to favorites in Internet Explorer).
That’s the traditional way of keeping track of content out there you want to refer to again.
Though currently only seven percent of Internet users tag content on a daily basis, tagging is expected to grow because of its sheer utility – maybe even at the expense of the now quite old-world categorizing ways of the Dewey Decimal System. Internet search as we currently know it is also expected to change as a result of people-powered indexing.
Technorati announced tagging just two years ago! I found it hard to believe that tagging is only two years old. But on the web, I guess two is much longer than I think.
I wrote earlier about Google’s effort to enlist users to tag images, in part through a competitive game that offers an incentive system.
Collaborative vocabulary, or collabulary, could make online content into a much more accessible repository by virtue of standardizing how content is tagged by its users.
His book on tagging, “Everything Is Miscellaneous,” won’t be available until next year, but David Weinberger’s thoughts on tags, those little scraps of metadata, were heard at a session of today’s Syndicate Conference.
In part two of Technorati founder David Sifry’s State of the Blogosphere notes, we find the blog search engine tracks a couple million more blogs than it did two weeks ago.
One of the most successful concepts of 2005 was most certainly “tagging”.
