A while back, Yahoo announced it would be retiring old versions of Yahoo Messenger – versions 6.0 through 7.5. They have now set a date for it at the end of the month – September, 30.
Yahoo Messenger users who are using anything older than 8.0 will no longer be able to sign in and use the service. Obviously, that means it’s time to upgrade, if you still intend to use Yahoo for your instant messaging.
UPDATE: Michael Vick has been conditionally reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Vick will be able to participate in preseason practices, meetings and workouts. A full reinstatement will be looked at for Week 6 of the regular season.
It’s been said that all politics is local and perhaps the same could be said for music. Not only do many fans love to support local music, but they want to know the best places to see it. Bands too, want to know which are the best places to perform. But like a voter choosing between candidates, which one is for them? Which choice are other members of their tribe supporting?
Update 2: Woz is done. His efforts may have kept him around longer than he would have made it otherwise, but in the end, he just didn’t make it.
Update: Woz has survived another round of Dancing with the Stars for all of you who want to stay up to date without having to watch the show.

The thing about being a journalist, web or otherwise, is you are essentially always on the job, and sometimes you’re on the clock when you least expect it. Rufus Edmisten, former attorney general and secretary of state for North Carolina turned Philip Morris/Sprint/Alltel lobbyist, was informed of my occupation more than once—web journalist, I told him—which didn’t seem to register on any particular level with him.
I’ll admit it. I’ve put off purposefully joining Open ID for no real reason. But now, whether we want to or not, you and I (well, I’m guessing you are, anyway) are being jumped in to the world of Open ID. Because not only are Yahoo Mail and Windows Live Mail (aka Hotmail) joining the Open ID ranks, allowing their logins to become Open ID logins, but so is Gmail.
In the days of dialup, accessing the Internet was a nuisance. Now, not so much. Still, users of Gmail and Google Calendar should be pleased to hear that the programs may support offline use in about six weeks’ time.
Legg Mason portfolio manager Bill Miller is kind-of-sort-of on Yahoo’s side as it deals with Microsoft, judging from a new interview. Since Legg Mason holds about seven percent of Yahoo’s shares, this is important.

Those (derogatorily or not) considered on the left side of the political spectrum seem to be turning on Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, especially in regard to her plan for expanding broadband access.
