Social Networks Provide “Momentum Effect”

Fox Interactive Media has released findings from a study that looked at the growth and marketing power of online social networks.
Over 70 percent of Americans ages 15-34 are using social networking sites on a regular basis. The sites see a spike in traffic during primetime hours, which improves communication with family and friends along with building brand connections.

Social Networking Not Close to Death

Alex Krupp, whose blog I haven’t come across before, makes a lot of sense in his latest post about social networking (which is fitting, since his blog is called Sensemaking). He notes that the term “social network” has become so over-sold that it now causes many venture capitalists to run screaming in the opposite direction, and startups are pitching their businesses in cliched Hollywood movie terms: It’s like MySpace meets Flickr, or Facebook meets Pornotube.

Honeymoon Over for Social Networks?

MediaPost reports on an In-Stat report that says the honeymoon is over for social networks. It’s time to root, hog, or die: “They need to start generating revenue now or bow out of the race, according to a new report from In-Stat. ‘In order for a social networking site to be successful, it must attain a critical mass, and competition is fierce to attract new members,’ said In-Stat analyst Jill Meyers.”
