Security Alert: New Vulnerabilities for Business This Year

One of the new weak spots – virtual private networks (VPN) – is a hot button security issue for most companies these days. A VPN lets companies use the Internet as a secure pathway into their existing network. If a VPN user has an always-on Internet connection like cable or DSL, it complicates things; this system is connected to the Internet as if it is unprotected (no firewall) and becomes an easy target. You can protect your network with a product such as CommandView Firewall from Elron, which rates supreme, thanks to its straightforward interface and high level of sophistication. For companies with larger networks, products such as Check Point Software Technologies Firewall-1 at Check Point may be the answer. Also check out Firewall Vendors under the Products/Firewalls area for a list of firewall vendors.

Basic Security for Your End Users

The first thing that I see as a problem usually does not involve expert cracking. Freely available on the internet are many programs that focus on specific vulnerabilities in a particular operating system, protocol or other feature of your network. Most cracks involve something as simple as a Trojan horse, which will leave a backdoor account open to the cracker. Young teenagers have been known to utilize such tools effectively, even against some corporate giants.

Clarifying Internet Security Topics

Security becomes an issue when one person owns property and does not want others to gain possession of it. Items like a car, house, office, file cabinet and computer have to be protected from rogues who want to destroy or steal them.

Most security systems are built to protect physical items. These security measures include locks, alarms and ID cards, to name a few. But when you connect a computer to the Internet, you are now vulnerable to scoundrels who will attempt to gain unauthorized access to your computer for a variety of purposes.

Creating Your Own Employment Security

“Well, it’s happening. My employer, the County Health and Welfare System, is buying me out. I leave in April, 2002. Seems like a long time from now, but I know it’s really just around the corner. So how do I evaluate my skills? And how do I begin a new career? And how do I deal with the fear of the unknown, of the lack of income (other than the retirement check), of maybe working alone out of this office?”

The Key to Your Security

There’s a lot of talk these days about the lack of security in the workplace, especially in corporate America. Events such as downsizing, re-structuring, mergers and acquisitions have many workers wondering whether the job they have today will be there tomorrow. This uncertainty has, in some places, resulted in a loss of morale and an unwillingness for some employees to give their best. After all, they think, “If I could be gone soon or have my job radically changed, why give 100% to this organization?”
