Are Search, Web Traffic, Indicators Of Offline Value?
I was out of the country when Heelys hit the scene, so learning about them later, as a novelty shoe line that reminded me of the KangaRoos I wore when I was five, was more of a mental pop culture note than a personal world-changing one. Had I been ten when they became popular, they likely would have shared Reebok Pump status in my personal must-have shoe history. Then again, I also hadn’t noticed the rise of Uggs and Crocs, either; the thigh-high black boots traversing Japan’s rail system I found a dozen levels more interesting, but for entirely separate reasons.

Google’s mapping products tend to attract a lot of attention, and like so many of Google’s efforts, a lot of advertisers, too. Microsoft wants everyone to know that there are advertising opportunities available through Live Search Maps, too, though.

MySpace is on top in the U.S., Facebook follows, and so on; we’re all familiar with the usual social network rankings. But here’s some interesting news: Orkut seems better suited to Iran than America. And Facebook, while successful here, should consider relocating its headquarters to Turkey. Microsoft Live Search Unveils Impressive Olympic Features
A picture of an ice cave is currently displayed on the Live Search homepage, but Microsoft’s users aren’t being left in the cold when it comes to Olympic-related information. Several special features have already launched, and even more are on the way.The most immediately noticeable thing may be the disappearance of said ice cave. In an email to Murdok, a Microsoft spokesman wrote, "The Live.com Homepage will rotate Olympics images in the background for the duration of the games."

Microsoft launched its first major update to Live Search Webmaster Tools since November, adding crawl issue feedback, backlink data, improved filtering, and the ability to export data in CSV format to Excel for offline analysis. Update: Five minutes after publishing, the Live Search Webmaster Team let us know they were delayed a little, and that the update should go live at 5:00 EDT.
Cuil Interest Shows Hunger For Search Competitor
Cuil, the search engine launched at the beginning of the week with brassy fanfare and progressive decrescendo on Monday, still looks about the same on Friday. It’s faster, at least, without 50 million—seriously—queries hitting its categorized servers. The images are still a bit out of whack, the categories still odd, the results certainly alternative.
Agents Can Search And Seize Laptops At U.S. Border
U.S. federal officials have disclosed that agents at the U.S. border may seize a traveler’s laptop or other electronic devices with no limits on how long they can hold them and without any suspicion of wrongdoing.The Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed the new policies that allow agents to search a laptop’s contents and share the information with other agencies and private organizations for language translation, data decryption or other reasons.
