The last thing either Yahoo or AOL wants to do right now is give away money; the companies are having enough trouble without handouts. Yet a federal court has ruled that Yahoo and AOL (along with RealNetworks) must pay millions in licensing fees to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

RealNetworks Bounces Back From Last Year
RealNetworks reported its financial results for the second quarter, which ended at the end of June. These included record revenue of $82.7 million, and net income of $4.7 million.

One of the big problems on the internet is the fact that by far the vast majority of people use slow dial-up connections. In spite of all of the hoopla about DSL and Cable, perhaps 90% to 95% of all of the people in the United States are still on dial-up. In addition, most of the rest of the planet has not been wired for high speed access and probably will not be for some time.
