It wasn’t too long ago people were skeptical about the future of podcasting – it is, after all, easy to be a skeptic about a medium so new (rappers are still wondering when they’re supposed fad will pass). But Wizzard Media has 70 million reasons to disagree, just last month.
Podcast Downloads Set New Record
I just noticed as I was browsing through my google reader that it now has an integrated podcast player, simple little feature but really neat.
I don’t want to sound like an old, crotchety, cynical, email-will-never-overtake-fax-machine dinosaur but I don’t think podcasts or video blogs are all they’re cracked up to be.
I’m the first to admit that I may be way off the mark here, because this is a somewhat counter-intuitive argument. The newer media of internet videos and podcasts seem like the next logical evolution of the written word, but think again. For the near future at least text-based information still has distinct advantages over video and voice.
Audio and visual search start-up Pluggd claims they have perfected their product. What does this mean for competing sites?
The audience for podcasts may be small but there are signs of growth. A report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, says that 12 percent of Internet users have downloaded a podcast so they listen to it or watch it at a later time.
Previously on the Internet, Apple put the fear of lawyers into podcasters over use of the term “podcast,” sending out cease and desist orders claiming the term was a violation of Apple’s iPod trademark. But one snarky Australian podcaster may have won this battle, and it only cost him a dollar.
Our public relations firm consistently uses the PRWeb Podcast service for our clients, but I’ve not taken advantage of the service very often for our own PR efforts with TopRank.
CalacanisCast, a weekly media, tech, finance podcast will launch in November as part of the PodTech network. The show’s sponsorships, thus far totaling $100,000, will be donated to Bay Ridge Preparatory School to provide private schooling for underprivileged children.
Larry LaCost’s welcoming smile was the first to greet us when we arrived at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo. A year’s worth of podcasting is enough to make Larry a veteran in the industry, though he’s been in the news business for a lot longer than that.
Paul Colligan seems a big fan of over-delivering. Though his presentation at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo was entitled “7 Proven Strategies to Monetize Your Podcast in 30 Days or Less,” my notes reached a length of five pages, containing no fewer than 20 websites to consider, and an entire industry compacted into one hour.
