From Terry Heaton’s PoMo blog comes word that MySpace — the 800-pound gorilla of social networking — will soon be launching a Digg-style news aggregation service of some kind.
Is that a good thing? It’s certainly interesting, and I would expect Digg to be worried about the prospect. Whether it’s actually something worthwhile depends on how it is handled.
MySpace News: Can You Digg It?
In terms of Social Networking, MySpace is the king of the virtual mountain. Even more than boasting its status as the premiere social site online, MySpace also touts the title of the most visited site on the Internet. With such a massive audience tuned in, MySpace continues to look for ways to increase the time on site for its users.
YouTube Gives MySpace, TV Networks A Thumpin’
It’s been nothing but up for YouTube lately, a hill steep enough to send a few key competitors tumbling backwards. MySpace added a video component? Wouldn’t know it by recent stats. Viacom copyright lawyers strip-searching everybody? So, what? Traffic’s never been better.
According to Compete.com, YouTube controls a 43.3 share of the online video market in January, up from 41.1 percent in December. That translates to 31.7 million unique visitors, up two million in one month. Meanwhile, MySpace Video is down by nearly the same amounts.
Fox, MySpace Ready To Roll Their Own Ads
Fox Interactive Media now has the tools in place to start relying less on third-party ad placement systems and more on what they can sell based on the data they have, like all of those MySpace profiles just hanging around the social networking site.
MySpace User Tracker Hackers Smacked
A plea deal will keep two young New York men from prison for attempting to extort $150,000 from the social networking site MySpace.
MySpace Beginning to Block Widgets?
One of the primary reasons that MySpace has achieved such success in the realm of social networking is the ability for users to customize their profiles with layouts, music, videos, and assorted other widgets.
As the number of MySpace users continues to grow, however, the company is becoming less inclined to allow third parties to use their social networking site as a marketing platform for their services. Last weekend, MySpace began blocking widgets from Vidlife, Stickam, Revver, and Imeem.
MerchantCircle Brings Local Businesses MySpace Platform
My hat’s off to MerchantCircle. I’ve just read a Business Week article that explains how the company is serving local businesses with a network that borrows a few ideas from MySpace. It sounds like they’ve hit on a winner!
Who is Using MySpace?
While I still have a MySpace account I never log in anymore. There was too much spam to deal with. And my girlfriend got so many creepy messages that she had to delete her account.
Generally, to use MySpace much, you have to do one or more of the following:
A Comic Book Community From MySpace
Social networking site MySpace has branched out into the world of comic books. Late last week MySpace launched MySpace Comic Book community, “a Place for Comic Books”.
MySpace Sending Spam?
I lived to see this day come to bear .. Myspace sending SPAM "member" emails, to an email address, that doesn’t exist (bliggy[at]bliggs.com), on one of my domains.
All the headers are legit, and the "member" email is sent to a "confirmed email". Go figure guys.
