Local Content Popular With Mobile Users

The number of people looking for local information on a mobile device grew 51 percent from March 2008 to March 2009, according to comScore.
The mobile browser is the most popular access method for finding local information, with 20.7 million users in March 2009, up 34 percent over a year ago. The strongest growth in the category is coming from downloaded applications, which grew 83 percent compared to a year ago, followed by SMS at 72 percent.

Associated Press Gets a Mobile Upgrade

The AP launched an update to its AP Mobile app for the iPhone and iPod Touch today, which is now available in the Apple App Store. This is an update based on user feedback from a soft launch of version 2.0 last week.

"In the next release we will ensure that the update process is seamless, story scrolling is much more smooth, the edit button on the More screen is reinstated and that you do not lose any personally stored information," Benjamin Mosse said on the AP Mobile Blog after that launch.

Intel Invests $884 Million in Mobile

Intel has announced today that it is acquiring software-maker Wind River Systems for $884 million. Wind River makes embedded devices.

Embedded systems and mobile devices include smart phones, mobile Internet devices, other consumer electronics (CE) devices, in-car "info-tainment" systems and other automotive areas, networking equipment, aerospace and defense, energy and thousands of other devices.

Mobile App Offers ‘Glympse’ Of Where You Are

A company called Glympse, Inc. launched a mobile phone app allowing users to share their location and provide a GPS-tracking map to a select group of people for a certain period of time.

For example, when Godot is running he late, he could send word and interactive Google Map application showing where he is, how fast he’s traveling, and what time he expects to arrive. Those waiting for Godot could know he’ll be there in about 10 minutes and they should just get started without him.

Smartphone Users Recalling More Mobile Ads

More than a third (38%) of U.S. mobile phone users remember seeing advertising on their cell phones in the first quarter of 2009, with smartphone owners recalling 59 percent of mobile advertising according to a new study by GfK Technology conducted on behalf of social networking service Brightkite.
For smartphone users, the top format is mobile advertising, while for regular phone users, it is SMS. The report found an increase in the types of mobile advertising formats that consumers are noticing.
