Simon & Schuster and TurnHere have launched online videos featuring Simon & Schuster authors and sneak previews of new releases. The videos will be hosted on a Simon & Schuster branded YouTube platform and on Bookvideos.tv, a new online video channel focused on books and author personalities.

Blinkx is a top-of-the-line video search engine, but the people who run it might want to consider a new line of work. After all, following Blinkx’s launch on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), the company raked in exactly what they predicted: 25 million pounds. Yes, those guys (and gals) would do quite well on the stock market.

Since digital media creators widely use Adobe tools to create and to distribute content, the company saw the opportunity to add playback and measurement to that ecosystem with Adobe’s just-announced Media Player.

This is cool, and I wish my former colleagues all the best! (Disclosure: I watched the site come to life from afar, though I wasn’t actively involved in it.) I’m also happy to have another way now to pose urgent questions, and I’m curious how well the system will work out in the future. Certainly the biggest obstacle will be marketing the service right to find lots of people asking questions (especially people with little time… because with competing services like Yahoo Answers, while you don’t invest money, you usually have to invest more time).
AskMeNow, a mobile search company has partnered with Merriam-Webster, publisher of print and electronic English language references to launch a mobile dictionary. Customers can access the dictionary by texting ASKME (27563). The service is available in the US and Canada.
Mobile users can also access interactive features such as Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day, which is designed to improve vocabulary and Open Dictionary, where members can create and submit their own new words and definitions.
Last week, Engadget reported that sources close to Microsoft had passed along information about a Zune-based competitor to Apple’s iPhone. Following up on those reports, CrunchGear goes on to say today that the Zune phone is not just a rumor and is confirmed for a 2007 release.
Six Internet companies have banded together in an effort to raise their profiles and have created their own Super Bowl ads, which they have uploaded to YouTube. Lacking the kind of budget it would take to air an ad during the game the half dozen decided to take a gamble and attempt to create a viral video campaign.
