Update: Hulu is reportedly critical of the latest ranking it has received from Nielsen Online.
Nielsen reported 8.9 million visitors to Hulu in March, while comScore said there were 42 million. There were 373 million videos viewed on Hulu in April, up from348 million in March. Even though the number of videos viewed was up, Nielsen said unique visitors to Hulu had declined from 9.5 million in February to 8.9 million in March to 7.4 million in April.
Twitter, Facebook Driving Social Networking Growth
April saw Americans flock online for the latest information related to the swine flu, causing traffic to surge at CDC.gov, according to new data from comScore.
The month also saw visits to social networking sites reach record numbers, driven by growth at Twitter and Facebook, as well as an increase in visits to real estate and home-related sites as the spring prompted many Americans to consider home improvements. The tax category also experienced strong growth due to the April 15 deadline.
eBay Competitor Bonanzle Continues Big-Time Growth
Back in February, Murdok posted a couple stories about a competitor to eBay that you may or may not have heard of. It’s called Bonanzle, and it’s been growing remarkably all year.
When we first looked at Bonanzle, we found out that it had been voted the best eBay alternative, and that the site had reached a million listings in six months. In December, the site was quoted as having 170,000 unique visitors.
Twitter Sees Big Growth in March, Co-founders Talk
Research from comScore shows that Twitter has jumped 131% in March to 9.3 million visitors in the U.S. This is an increase of 5 million visitors from February.
Twitter Experiences 1,392% Growth In February
Most of us would be happy in this economy for any growth that occurred between Feb of 2008 and Feb of 2009. 10 percent would be fine. 50% would be amazing. 100% growth gets you rock star status. So if you are Twitter and Nielsen gave you the news that your subscriber base grew 1,392% in that period you may need to change your shorts.
Video Game Sales See Double-Digit Growth
According to figures from Top Global Markets, an integrated monthly report from the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Enterbrain, combined video game software unit sales across the world’s largest three markets experienced 11 percent growth in 2008.
Sales totaled 409.9 million units compared to 367.7 million units sold across these markets in 2007.
Mobile Internet Growth Driven By Social Networking
Social networking is attracting new users to the mobile Web in Europe. In November, 34 percent of mobile phone owners in Western Europe who visited social networking sites accessed social media exclusive of all other mobile Web content, according to comScore.With 12.1 million users in Western Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K.), mobile social networking is a rapidly expanding category that grew 152 percent from November 2007 to November 2008.
Job Search Web Sites See Big Growth
Job search was the fastest growing online category in the U.S. in 2008, according to comScore.The job search category saw the number of visitors grow 51 percent to 18.8 million visitors. The final months of the year usually see a slow down in job searching activity because of the holidays, but were instead some of the most heavily trafficked months of 2008.
AOL Sites Saw Solid Growth In 2008
AOL has announced that its sites saw significant growth in 2008 with page views increasing to 71 billion from 48 billion, up 47 percent for the year.Unique visitors grew from a monthly average of 70.4 million to 73.4 million, and total minutes increased from 40 billion to 47 billion year-over-year, up 17 percent, according to comScore.
