The Past
Google’s email service Gmail was launched to the public five years ago this week. Back then, the service turned the web email industry on its ear by offering an entire gigabyte of storage to users who were lucky enough to receive an invite. Small potatoes now, but that was a nice chunk of storage from an email service back then.
India’s 15th general election is fast approaching, and Google’s determined to help anyone wanting to either participate in or monitor the event. The search giant launched the Google India Elections Centre in both English and Hindi to facilitate the spread of information.
There’s been an unbelievable amount of buzz circulating around an acquisition that everyone likes to fantasize about, but may or may not ever actually occur. I’m talking of course about Google buying Twitter.

Google has introduced an iGoogle gadget for Insights for Search. It displays the top rising searches and top related searches on your Google home page. Users can change the settings to show results for a specific location, keyword, category, or source.
CVS Caremark has expanded its partnership with Google Health by offering its pharmacy customers the ability to download their prescription and medication histories to their Google Health account.
Customers filling prescriptions at CVS pharmacy stores can now add their medication history to their online medical record directly from CVS.com.
We’re not witnessing the death of newspapers or journalism, just the apathetic and bloody culling of evolution; those with sustainable business models will survive, and those without, well, it’s curtains for ya. Nothing personal, just the way it’s gotta be.
Google is obligated to support Mozilla’s Firefox browser through a search contract until 2011. But rumors suggest that may be the end of the Google-Firefox alliance.
People were relatively stunned when Google launched its own web browser, Chrome, and they wondered allowed what that would mean for Google’s relationship with the browser that quickly rose to the second most used browser in the world.
So much for the time, money, and compromises on censorship Google’s committed in the region thus far. Plus its new music venture. An analyst said this morning that Google’s Chinese arm won’t do so well, anyway.
Google’s changing it up, and local search optimization just became very, very important.
It used to be a searcher had to be very specific about a query to bring back local results. To borrow from Search Engine Guide’s Miriam Ellis, who tips us off to the changes in the usual Google “10 pack,” or the top ten search results, a search for “chiropractor” reveals just how geographically targeted Google’s results are now.
