Google Takes the Next Step in Personalized Search

Google’s Searchology event was today, and Google used this to give kind of a "state of search" presentation, something the company often does in a variety of formats.

One of the highlights of the event was Marissa Mayer introducing some changes to Google’s search results. This is called "Search Options," and allows users to "slice" and "dice" results in a number of ways.

Fun With Google Trademark Apps

It’s been long established that just because Google has registered a domain, it doesn’t mean the company has any plans other than keeping the domain out of non-company hands; googleblows.com is a good example. But what about trademark applications? That’s a bit more expensive and serious method of protecting certain names.

A quick search through trademark applications at the USPTO’s website brings back about 60 Google-related attempts at trademarking, many from Google and (surprisingly) many not from Google.

Want to Get Your Google Profile Verified?

Now that Google is putting Google Profiles in search results, you might want to consider getting verified. You have to go through a process to do this however.

"Should you get a verified name? Right now, it doesn’t influence whether your profile will rank better in profile results," says Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land. "But if you’re trying to convince people to trust that the page is really controlled by you, it probably makes sense."

It’s not all about traffic. It’s about conversions. But it’s hard to get conversions if you don’t have the traffic, and while Google is one of the best potential sources for traffic, Google has other search engines besides web search that people use all the time, and it will not hurt to rank in them too.
