On Wednesday, Google held its Annual Developer Conference, which this year dealt a lot with the acceleration of the open web platform. There was a specific focus on HTML 5, which Google says is enabling developers to build uniquely powerful web apps.
Google announced the following new products at the conference:
Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft sure do a good job of looking out for sports fans and film enthusiasts. Although each company uses a different name for its feature, all three recently highlighted ways in which users can receive the latest information.
Google has introduced new features to Google Suggest in order to make searching faster (and place some ads). Google Suggest is (of course) the list of suggestions Google gives you when you begin typing a query into the search box.
Google’s new data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is all set to go. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday, and so the search giant has pretty well signaled that it’s ready to forge ahead (in at least this one way) despite the recession.
Earlier this year, Google laid off about 200 employees in the sales and marketing department. Head of Sales, Tim Armstrong also left the company to become CEO of AOL. Armstrong then got Senior Google sales executive Jeff Levick to go with him.
For a while, the blogs were burning with the rumors that Google was going to buy a newspaper. Eric Schmidt has laid these suspicions to rest by announcing that Google will not pursue that option.

Is there anything that Google doesn’t do? Seriously. Today the company has announced the first partners for its PowerMeter Tool.
Essentially, the PowerMeter (available as a Google gadget) shows consumers how much electricity they are using right from their computer. The idea is of course that when you can see how much electricity you are using on an appliance-by-appliance basis, you can make the necessary adjustments to reduce the amount of energy you are using/wasting. Google is expanding the Search Query Performance Report for AdWords. The goal is to provide users with more visibility into the performance of ads and to aid in the decision process.
