Google To Lobby FCC About Spectrum Auctions

Google, Yahoo, and eBay have enlisted satellite carriers EchoStar and DirecTV to help them lobby the Federal Communications Commission about keeping a close eye on how spectrum auctions are conducted. The alliance aims to put tighter reins on incumbent last mile providers of broadband access.

The last mile and who controls it has been a mounting concern among the major "network-less" players like Google, Yahoo, and eBay. The concern rises from suspicion of the telecommunications industry, and its control over chokepoints.

Microsoft and Google – Different Approaches to Copyright

The Association of American Publishers and the Authors Guild is none too happy with Google’s plan to indiscriminately scan, index, and allow the searching of millions of books from libraries the world over and Microsoft is capitalizing on this rare chink in Google’s armor.

Copyrighters are claiming infringement because Google is making advertising revenue from the results of book searches in the Google Book Search system. Here are all of Google’s arguments that I found:

More New Features For Google Finance

Playing second fiddle to Yahoo isn’t a position that Google finds itself accustomed to these days, as the company clearly has Yahoo trumped in the realm of search. Finance, however, is a different story for Google as it has struggled to compete with Yahoo in this particular niche.

It’s been nearly nine months since Google launched its finance site upon the Internet world, and it still has yet to make so much as a dent into Yahoo’s lead in this particular market.

Google, BMW Get Drivers Where They Need To Go

BMW’s tagline used to be “Ultimate Driving Machine.” Then, in 2006, the auto manufacturer switched to “A Company of Ideas.” While that doesn’t have the same ring, it may at least allow a bit more room to explain BMW’s new arrangement with Google. In effect, German bimmer owners will be able to link their cars’ navigation systems to Google Maps.

Google Book Search Goes to Germany

The Bavarian State Library has decided to partake in Googles project to scan books from the world’s great collections. As one of the largest libraries in the German-speaking world, the library has around nine million volumes and will make around one million books available to Google search.
