Facebook is gearing up to face off with the government again—this time over privacy concerns in two different venues: the California courts and a Canadian commission.
Facebook Not Living Up To Canada’s Privacy Law
It wouldn’t be a day in business any more if the main focus wasn’t government intervention, would it? It appears that all of the freedom that the Internet was supposed to offer is maybe a little too much for the folks to our north. The Canadian government has issued a report that tells Facebook that many areas concerning privacy for the social networking site don’t meet the standards of Canadian privacy law.
Online Video Popular In Canada
In February 21 million Canadians viewed more than 3.1 billion videos online, according to a new report from comScore Video Metrix.
The average Canadian online video viewer spent 10 hours viewing videos in February, an increase of 53 percent from their average viewing time last year.
"Canada’s high broadband penetration and tech savvy Internet users make it an optimal environment for online video to flourish," said Bryan Segal, vice president of sales, comScore Canada.
Google Says Bell Canada Is Breaking The Law
Google says Bell Canada is violating Canadian telecommunications law by slowing Internet traffic and is requesting the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) take action against the company."Bell claims its throttling of peer-to-peer applications is a reasonable form of network management. Google respectfully disagrees. Network management does not include Canadian carriers’ blocking or degrading lawful applications that consumers wish to use," Google said in a statement to the CRTC.
