Getting New Business Fast

Recently two business owners came to me in dire straits. The first, who owned a dental billing company, had suffered sabotage by a disgruntled employee. Clients deserted in droves when told, falsely, that he was being investigated for fraud. The second, who owned a computer training firm, had neglected to market for a year and had just discovered the delayed effect of his omission. Both appealed to me: Help! We need more business fast!

On Wednesday, November 6th, 2002, I attended the Meet The Makers seminar at the Millennium Broadway in New York City. The guest list included senior executives from companies such as AT&T, ABC, Clear Channel, Comedy Central and MTV. None, though, more compelling than the guest whose name many readers of this article have never heard before.

Internet Storm Watchers

Most of us are content with the protection a firewall affords us, and don’t bother to analyze the data the programs collect. Which ports are being probed? How often? Is the same source IP repeated with alarming frequency? We rarely check. The information locked away in those unexamined log files could potentially prevent script kiddie rampages, stop the spread of malware, and even help track and prevent hacker break-ins. And yet those files go largely unanalyzed, especially by home users. The firewall does its job, and we’re satisfied.
