Fast Forward : Wisdom of the Week

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED

Be willing to say to yourself, “I’m on the right road. I’m doing OK. I’m succeeding.” We too frequently become adept at pointing out our flaws and identifying failures. Become equally adept at citing your achievements. Identify things you are doing now that you weren’t doing one month ago six months ago a year ago. What habits have changed? Chart your progress.

The Unexpected “Thank You”

I bought my first new car when I was 21 years old. It was a bright red convertible. Along with the joy of owning my dream car came the responsibility of paying for it. I remember how the feeling of “buyer’s remorse” plagued me for days after I drove the car off the dealer’s lot. (“Buyer’s remorse” is what we feel after making an impulsive decision …until we can justify our decision with logical reasons.)

Praising Up

After a presentation about the importance of praise and recognition at work today individuals often say something like: “These concepts are great-I wish I could get my manager to thank and appreciate me more!” To which we often reply, “When was the last time you praised your manager?” This often catches people by surprise, as if a manager doesn’t or shouldn’t need thanks or praise. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Leadership Lessons from the Pearl Harbor Disaster

One strategy for achieving your full leadership potential is to study history, and learn from the mistakes of others. I recently read At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor, the definitive 889-page study of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. The bountiful human errors of leadership suggest lessons for leaders that may help you prevent your competitors from catching you and your company off guard and asleep.

Friendlier Flash: Creating a Flash Preloader

With the release of a new version of Flash, Flash movies on Web sites are more popular than ever. While such movies succeed in adding interactivity, animation, and information to a site, some Flash movies can become prohibitively large. After all, not everyone on the Internet has DSL or cable access. Keep in mind that many of your site visitors are still plodding along with dialup access. Although Flash does a respectable job of cutting down the size of movies for Web sites, they can still be quite large. This is bad news for your site visitors viewing your site through the aforementioned slow connections.
