Mozilla, creator of the popular Firefox Internet browser and a number of other products, announced the creation of the Mozilla Corporation today. They created the commercial side to generate revenue and while their market share increases steadily, this should help them grow even further.
Mitchell Baker, president of Mozilla said in her blog, “The formation of the Mozilla Corporation gives the Mozilla Foundation new capabilities for becoming even more successful in delivering innovative open source end-user products.”
Started by $2 million in funds chipped in by AOL/Netscape, Mitchell Baker has guided this open-source organization to its #2 status in the Internet browser market and quite popular with Microsoft haters everywhere.
“The Mozilla Foundation continues in its role as the vital center of the Mozilla project, working on behalf of all participants and constituents in the Mozilla community to ensure it remains a successful and vibrant open source project,” said Frank Hecker, director of Policy for the Foundation. “With the establishment of the Mozilla Corporation, the Foundation is well-positioned to build on and extend the past successes of the Mozilla project.”
In InternetNews, Hecker said the creation of this subsidiary will allow Mozilla to begin dealing with PC manufacturers to ship desktops with Firefox. This could dramatically increase the market penetration by Mozilla as their name become more widespread.
How this will set with the open source community remains to be seen as Mozilla switches to more of a profit oriented company. While they say there are no plans to become a stock laden entity, some ideologues may not be pleased with this move.
