Have You Ever Thought About Becoming A Free Agent?

Are you a great typist, bookkeeper, or financial advisor? Do have specialized skills as a CPA, Tax Specialist, or experience in Human Resources? Are you an expert in hanging wallpaper, painting, landscaping? If it’s broke can you fix it? Do you enjoy running errands, or carting kids to appointments? Do all of your friends ask your advice, or for your assistance? Then you may be the perfect candidate to start a business as a Free Agent.

Being a Free Agent is one of the easiest businesses to run because it doesn’t require a large office space, has very little overhead expense, and you won’t have employee problems to deal with. Basically as a Free Agent you will only have to worry about your own level of competence and how well you meet your obligations.

Almost anyone can market or sell their skills or talents as a Free Agent. Free Agents’ can engage in part-time or temporary assignments with several clients, businesses, and employers allowing for an extremely flexible schedule. Or a Free Agent can secure a position with a company and enjoy a profitable and long-term situation. (Many companies are beginning to see the benefit of hiring Free Agents because they do not have to provide them with benefits and they only pay for the actual work done instead of break and down times.)

To begin your business as a Free Agent you need to focus on your prospects needs, and how you can fulfill them. You cannot simply say (or even prove) how wonderful you are at whatever you do and expect to get many clients. This applies to all of your printed material: flyers, business cards, letters, etc… as well as when your speaking with prospective clients. You will be successful if you can point out the needs of your prospects and then demonstrate how you can meet those needs in a cost effective way for them.

Once you have secured a client, keep them happy and you will accomplish two things:

    1. You will have a customer of life. (Even if you’ve only contracted a temporary position, any time the customer has another need that you are qualified to fulfill – you will be their first choice!)

    2. You will have gained the best advertising there is, Word of Mouth. (If they love your service and tell their business associates, family, and friends; you’ve just gained advertising that no amount of money can buy!)

Keeping your clients happy is a fairly simple thing to do if you remember these two important steps:

    1. Never promise more than you can deliver-and-whenever possible deliver more than you promised! (Turn in typed work on high quality paper, beat a deadline by a couple of days, after running errands but before returning to their office call to see if there is anything else they need. If it’s some type of manual labor that you’ve performed, clean up after the job even though it’s not standard practice in the industry, pay attention to small details, make sure to put everything back in it’s place.)

    2. Always communicate with your clients on a regular basis. Don’t keep them guessing about how the job is going, keep them informed! Your clients don’t want surprises they want to know that they are getting what they’re paying for. (Whether it’s daily, weekly, monthly, whatever is appropriate for the job your doing, there are many ways to keep in touch with your clients: meetings, telephone calls, emails, newsletters, etc…)

Becoming a Free Agent can be a very rewarding experience. It can offer you a very flexible schedule, a lucrative income, a wide range of people and companies to work with; while allowing you to remain in control of your career!
