Google Upgrades Blog Search Tool

If you’ve ever frequented Internet forums or blogs, you’ve probably seen it happen-a thread goes quiet, becomes dormant, and for all intents and purposes, dies. Then a year later some goober comes along and replies to it. A new tool from Google will help eliminate these occurrences.

Google Blog Search allows users to narrow their search according to the span of dates in which they’re interested. And according to the company’s announcement, they “also incorporated some improvements in search quality that should make your blog-search experience even better.”

Google’s index of blogs is following its own version of Moore’s law, doubling in size every six months. Given that amazing fact, this new feature may qualify more as a “valuable tool” than as a “cheap gimmick.”

Google is, of course, the reigning champ of search engines. According to a study done in the fall of 2005 by the Dutch firm OneStat, over half of all search engine references come from either Google or one of its slightly re-branded overseas versions.

And blogging is becoming more relevant than ever. Several items have been in the news lately about, well, blogging’s role in the news. Blogs, long viewed by many as the province of crazy cat ladies, are gaining a reputation as important business tools, as well.

The latest overhaul to Google’s engine might prove to be truly useful. Perhaps the conclusion of the Google Blog Search announcement says it best: “Take it for a spin and let us know what you think.”
