Yahoo picks up adventure author and filmmaker Richard Bangs to create content based on exotic adventure expeditions around the world.
Thrilling adventures on roaring rivers, forbidding mountains, and uncharted islands will be neatly packaged into multimedia format and served up by Yahoo to its portal visitors. The company has tapped Bangs to create exclusive content for the site, AP reports.
Today, the first part of his work, focusing on a climb up the Eiger peak in Siwtzerland, will debut on Yahoo’s web site. The climb will be a five-part series, and follows the journey of John Harlin III. His father died when his rope broke while climbing a new route up the Eiger in 1966; that route was since named for him.
Other content from Bangs should be available on Yahoo on about a monthly basis. “We are trying to define the next generation of Internet media,” Scott Moore, Yahoo’s vice president of content, said in the report.
Yahoo’s first attempt at original content, Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone, began in September. Hot Zone follows Sites’ solo travels to global places of armed conflict over the course of a year.
The content creation comes at a time of intense competition for Internet viewers. Yahoo is the most visited site among the four major players, including MSN, Google, and AOL. All have been working to better capture eyeballs, and more importantly ad exposures and clicks, to grab a bigger share of search advertising revenue.
