Discovery Damaged By Debris Already

Just a day before the already delayed launch of the space shuttle Discovery, a window cover dropped from the shuttle, colliding into thermal tiles which will have to be replaced before launch. With all the parts falling off space shuttles recently, maybe it’s time to trade in for a newer model.

NASA says it can be fixed in time for Wednesday’s 3:51 PM EST launch. Engineers could be seen scrambling for duct tape (that’s not true) as they began inspecting the body of the shuttle to address the needed repairs.

The plastic-and-foam window cover “struck a bulge in the fuselage housing an orbital-maneuvering engine,” according to the Associated Press. The plastic-and-foam window cover was replaced with part of a disposable cooler acquired at a Florida Wal-Mart (that’s not true, either).

Stephanie Stilson, who is in charge of launch preparations, conveyed to the AP that though the tiles on an underlying metal panel were damaged and would need to be replaced, the work would be done quickly and wouldn’t delay the launch.

News of the incident came two hours after NASA announced Discovery was completely ready to launch.

Falling window covers weren’t part of the discussion yesterday as officials told reporters that there were still three or four concerns to be addressed before launch.

After a three-hour meeting, Deputy shuttle program manager Wayne Hale said those concerns included some tricky sensors on the external fuel tank, unfinished paperwork, and the 30% chance of thunderstorms forecast during launch time.

While Hale didn’t say anything about falling window covers, the local mechanics thought “she” might need a new exhaust system and gave “her” a 70/30 chance of making it to the family reunion in Valdosta.
