On Monday, scientists discovered a hot new piece of star front property about 15 light years from here. The new planet has a remarkable close up view of the star Gliese 876.
The terrain is a bit rocky but the temperature is always warm ranging from balmy 400 to a fairly warm 700 degrees Fahrenheit. The dawning of the Age of Aquarius is here as you travel to this new vacation destination located towards the Aquarius constellation.
Two gas giants in the same solar system dwarf this small, secluded little bungalow of a planet. The exclusivity of it makes it a definite destination for those who like truly exotic vacation homes.
“This is the smallest extrasolar planet yet detected and the first of a new class of rocky terrestrial planets,” said team member Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. “It’s like Earth’s bigger cousin.”
This little planet, while significantly larger than earth is the closest to earth of the 150 or so planets found thus far. The debate for planets like earth has been going on for millennia.
“This planet answers an ancient question,” said team leader Geoffrey Marcy, professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. “Over 2,000 years ago, the Greek philosophers Aristotle and Epicurus argued about whether there were other Earth-like planets. Now, for the first time, we have evidence for a rocky planet around a normal star.”
The star itself, Gliese 876 is considered extremely small; the smallest planet found to have planets orbiting it.
