The Newspaper Division of Gannett Co. announced that Barbara A. Henry has been named senior group president of the newly-formed Interstate Newspaper Group.
Henry will continue as president and publisher of The Indianapolis Star. The new group also includes The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Courier-Journal in Louisville, The Tennessean in Nashville and Gannett’s other daily and non-daily publications in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and southern Ohio.
“The new Interstate Group brings together four key metropolitan markets and our other publications in this part of the country,” said Gary L. Watson, president of the Newspaper Division. “We expect this will allow us to increase our service to advertisers and readers alike in each of these markets.”
“Barbara Henry is the ideal executive to lead this new group given her successes as an editor, publisher and group officer,” Watson said
Henry joined Gannett in 1974 at the Reno (NV) Gazette Journal, where she served in a variety of newsroom roles. In 1982, she joined USA TODAY, participating in the launch of The Nation’s Newspaper. She returned to Reno in 1983 to become executive editor. In 1986, she was named editor of the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle. Five years later, she was named president and publisher of the Great Falls (MT) Tribune. In 1996, she became president and publisher of The Des Moines Register. She moved to The Indianapolis Star in 2000, where she also has served as president of the Indiana Group.
She has been selected as Gannett’s Publisher of the Year three times and was the company’s Manager of the Year in 2002.
David F. Licko, vice president/finance at Indianapolis, becomes group controller for the Interstate Group. He held a similar position in the Indiana Group. Gary Suisman, president and publisher of the Journal and Courier in Lafayette, Ind., and Leslie Giallombardo, president and publisher of The Tennessean, will continue to be group vice presidents.
