Doing the Things You Thought You Couldn’t Do!

All of us at one time or another had something which we thought at the time, was beyond us. It could have been something as simple as driving a car or speaking a foreign language. At the time we coudn’t see ourselves doing that activity.

And when we looked at the people who were actually doing these things, for example our parents or others, we admired them. They looked so accomplished, doing that activity, which looked so complicated to you. Today many of us are doing those very same things. And you know what, it doesn’t feel like any big deal. Why? Because we have gotten used to it, we mastered it.

However, today we all are faced with new challenges, and when we see others who have already mastered those particular challenges we admire them. But we shouldn’t admire them, we should rather be inspired by them and learn from them.

We must also remember and remind ourselves of the things we did to overcome earlier challenges. The problem with us human beings is that we forget so easily, especially our successes. Somehow we think that, perhaps because the situation is different, we cannot apply the same principles that helped us overcome earlier challenges.

We also seem to think that a different set of principles apply for small things then, say for big things, which isn’t true. It’s just that for big things it may take a bit longer, but the same principles still apply.

The difference lies in the way we look at and see things.

When we see things as a challenge we lose the awe and the fear we hold for it. Do you know why you overcame earlier difficulties? Because you saw it as a challenge. An opportunity to be taken and you took it.

The situation itself didn’t change at all. The only thing that changes is one’s perception of a situation, which makes it seem doable. And because it “becomes” doable we go ahead and do it.

Socalled difficulties lose their power over us when we look at it differently. Instead it is us who become the one’s wielding the power, because its up to us when and how we are going to conquer the situation.

Seneca sums it up well when he says, “It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”

Life with all of its challenges allow us to grow and become bigger and stronger. When we cower in fear, we remain where we are and the way we are. We never grow, we never discover what could have been. Where we could have gone, what we could have done.

When I look at my life right now, I can hardly believe what I see. The things I’m doing right now, seemed unthinkable just two years ago. I’ve had so many people compliment me on my work and thank me for what I did for them. But all of that would not have been possible had I not changed my focus and confronted my situation.

As Henry Ford said, “One of the greatest discoveries that a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.” And all it takes is to change one’s focus. To allow yourself to see what you Can be.

Is that too hard? I would think not, for if it were I wouldn’t have been able to do it, neither would the thousands of others.
