Default Yahoo to compete with Bing despite Microsoft deal

Yahoo Inc said on Monday it has revamped its search to compete against Microsoft Corp's Bing, even as it relies on the Redmond giant to power its queries.

It may be because due to the reports that the Microsoft gained 0.5 percent in July.
According to the latest reports,

64.7 percent for Google
19.3 percent for Yahoo
and 8.9 percent for BING.

The deal between yahoo and bing has not been approved yet. So I am not surprised that they still compete each other at this moment.

I always think that it is healthy to have competition. This will be advantage for users like us otherwise we will have lesser choice when comes to searching for products or services. I always love to compare my search for products using different search engines. That way, I can get a comparison of the products being sold at different places since normally I get different search results.

Yes, I too agree with your opinion. There should be a healthy competition in every market, otherwise there would be no quality.

It is healthy to have competition, but not amongst the 2nd and 3rd tier only. To watch 2 power houses fight over the scraps of the SE world isn't very becoming of them honestly. If you don't want to win, then you are playing for 2nd best...and that's not a race anyone wants to be in; they need to partner up and see what they can do together.

Even though BING has less than 10% market share, it enjoys so much publicity.
It may be the secret of Microsoft.

I am fortunate enough to get to meet on a quarterly basis with teams of sales people from Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL, and even Ask because we spend millions on a monthly basis advertising with these engines. Our marketing team has standing daily or weekly conference calls with all of them. I knew about Bing probably 6-9 months before the announcement, and it was described to me at the time as a rebrand of Live. And that's pretty much what it's turned out to be - Live with a few tweeks. They added a few cool things, but under the hood it's still Live.

I honestly don't see Microsoft or Yahoo! ever having a chance of taking a substantial amount of Google's search market share. It will take some totally new innovation coming out of nowhere from some unknown person/company... kind of like Google did.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has NEVER been an innovator. They are not an 'idea' company. They are a marketing company. Since the begining of Microsoft they have been buying or copying other peoples ideas and simply out marketing them. But they were always able to buy leading companies in the markets they wanted to be in rather than having to innovate or create their own product. They can't buy Google so there is no way they'll ever over take Google IMO. Look at all of the money Microsoft is spending on advertising. How often do you see Google ads on TV?

I predicted when Bing arrived on the scene that after all the buzz settled, things would return to about the same levels... that perhaps Bing might steal a little marketshare from Yahoo! But in the end Google will win. And that seems to be the case.

Google has cool, innovative ideas. They create a work environment where creativity is promoted and rewarded. The others are typical corporate environments where entrepreneurial attitudes and creativity are snuffed. IMO that is why Google continues to win.

I very much agree. Don't underestimate Microsoft:
  1. IBM's OS/2 was far better than Windows. I have Simula for OS/2 Warp, but can not use it. I still have my old IBM PS/2 with Simula. I uninstalled the OS and when I wanted to reinstall it, one disk is corrupt. There is no more pedagogical compiler than Simula to learn true OOP. And it is still used at the University of Oslo.
  2. Microsoft SQL server, I don't know it. Is there any better than Oracle?
  3. Internet Explorer. It comes preinstalled on 90 per cent of all sold Pc's here.
  4. Live, I never liked it. Yahoo is much better. Microsoft bought Norwegian Fast, so Bing may be better than Live.
  5. Office, I don't use it so much longer, but it was good. Today you have Open office and
  6. Open, nearly everything aside from
  7. C++Builder that is may favourite platform.
  8. For one reson or another, it seems that the market prefer, ASP.NET, ...
  9. There must be something with Microsoft's marketing department.
  10. Money speaks.

Mainly agree. Hopefully it will continue to be the best native SE.

I focused in on Ask because from the recent commercials that I have seen from them it looks like they're trying to focus in on shopping comparison? The commercial I saw seemed to be targeting people looking for a 'deal'

In the end, they're all competing for the same eyeballs, much like auto manufacturers who compete against all others even if they're targeting a specific make and model in their ads. For instance, Chevy's Malibu seems to be targeting Accord and Camry, doesn't mean they're not still competing with the Fusion....

It's interesting, when looking at share of the search market, to see just how uncompetitive things are here in the UK when compared to elsewhere in the world.

Right now, I would say that Yahoo & Bing would be happy if they had 15% of the UK search market (in total - not each)
