Default Yahoo School Search Deal vs PPC

Hi,

My children's public school just sent out a bulletin on something that Yahoo is doing in the search marketing arena that I was unaware of. Yahoo has partnered with the Fund-it Benefit Bar Program, Welcome | Fund-It/BenefitBar. It is a fundraiser using Yahoo search that involves their PPC program. The offer is listed below. I've x'ed out our school name. Basically schools add Yahoo's search to their sites. Yahoo will pay $0.10 for every click on sponsored search results delivered via the search results. Kudos to Yahoo for a creative marketing plan.

It requires registration and a download. Ordinarily registration/download programs are flops; however, given this is for a public school, parents may jump through the hoops to make it happen.

Still I find this bitter sweet. As a parent I happy to see the school has another source of revenue that will cost them nothing in dollars or time. As a search marketer it makes me cringe. I can see some gunho parents becoming click happy fiends.

Since I hadn't seen anything on this in any of the forums I thought I would throw it out there as an fyi to marketers.

SCHOOL BULLETIN
xxxxxxx Employees and Patrons:

We have a great opportunity to help raise money for our high school and middle school athletic programs and for technology for all of our Schools through the Fund It – Benefit Bar program sponsored by Yahoo. The nature of the program is that when you go out to search for something on the internet and go through the Yahoo xxxxx Benefit Bar Search Engine on one of the “sponsored links” (these are the four on the top and the six on the side on most searches – NOT the numbered search sites), we get a dime for every search. This can be a wonderful opportunity for us to raise some significant and much needed funds if everyone will get on board and participate. Please send this information to your email distribution lists whether they are in xxxxx or not. You can put this on your home, school, and business computers. The instructions are as follows:

On a PC with Internet Explorer:
Go to http://www.grevse.com/xxxxxx You will need to put in your name and email address and then submit your information. You will be given a series of prompts. Simply click on Run; Run; Next; Install; Finish at the prompts as they come up and then you should be getting a toolbar that is specifically made for xxxxxxx with: xxxxxxx Public Schools on the left; then your search bar (Search Here, Fund It); then xxxxx Public Schools, Schools, and Calendar links on the right.

Note: Initially, we have been getting blocked at school but our IT Director xxxxxx is working on fixing that situation and may have already done so on your school computers. Please let xxxxx know if the problem still persists.

On a Mac computer:
If you have an Apple MacIntosh computer you will probably need to download Firefox at Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client which is a free web browser ( you cannot download toolbar on Safari) After you have downloaded Firefox you can follow the same steps that are listed above when you go to that website that is listed.

Please make legitimate searches and encourage others to do the same. I will eventually be visiting with elementary principals about this as well because it will benefit the entire district in terms of technology. This has great potential if everyone gets on board with it.
