In my experience it's been that the Yahoo directory didn't help much over a long period of time in Yahoo. This was due to that the company had later changed it's products/keywords, but for a long time they were still showing up in Yahoo results for the old keywords, based on their Yahoo directory listing. Of course it didn't help a bit showing up for outdated keywords that were unrelated to their current product offerings.
That said, I've seen companies drop their listing completely from Yahoo's directory, and it made no impact whatsoever in Google or MSN. So it may help somewhat to jumpstart a presence, but in my view it's not worth it being a long-term investment (meaning, no need to keep renewing in subsequent years).

Yes, I'm beginning to think that a Yahoo directory listing is highly overrated for both search engine benefit and clicks.

dmoz, yahoo, or gump directory? They are just directories. No matter how hard it is or how much it costs to be listed, the fact remains the same. They are just directories. I don't know a single person that uses any directory faithfully to find what they're looking for. No directory is going to send even 1 unique site visitor every day, so I wouldn't rely on a directory for much of anything!
As far as SEO is concerned, I focus on directories that consistantly rank high in the search engines when I am searching phrases that are related to the site I am working on ie... When I search using the phrase "widgets" because I sell widgets, I scan the first 3 or 4 pages of results for directories because theses directories will give you the best visibility. The rest of the directories have never done any of my websites any good at all. I have never been able to get a site listed in the dmoz directory, and I have never payed the rediculous $300/yr to be listed in the yahoo directory and I still manage to get to the first page of results for my desired keywords/phrases.

Dave is right, niche directories are the best. If you can find any directories in your website's niche I strongly recommend submitting to them. They might send you some traffic and the SEO benefit will be much better because of the relevancy.

While most of the directories are mainly used to build backlinks not serve traffic.. It's good not to rely on it in terms of traffic but it can be useful if you aim to hit the first page of SERPs to deserve traffic.

i don't believe that the yahoo directory is worth the money. niche directories that show up in results for searches for your keywords is a much better approach.
