Default G and MSN are great but Y isnt!?

Orite people. Ive got a customer whose site does really well on G and MSN but not so well on Y. Can anyone give me some quick pointers as to what i can do to sort this out? (e.g. what are some of the differences between G and Y optimisation techniques)

Bearing in mind that i dont want to do too much to the site for fear of hurting the G and MSN positions.

Yahoo seems to be more interested in on site content than MSN or G .. G is most interested in links, MSN links and content ... Yahoo likes links but content is more King there than anywhere ... so, I would scour this forum and others like it for what works on Yahoo ... more content would be my direction ...

mjtaylor, unfortunately it is not even like that and I'd really wished I was wrong. In my opinion, Yahoo!'s results get worse and worse day after day.

Even MSN is getting ahead, even in terms of consideration for webmasters with the launch of their Webmaster Tools Console ( similar to Google Webmasters Central ): Live Search Webmaster Center

I think I may have been unclear. I am not saying that their algorithm returns the best content or the most relevant; I am saying that Yahoo's algo puts more weight on content than on links, as compared to Google and MSN. Whether a search engine's SERPS are relevant, irrelevant, improving, or deteriorating has nothing to do with optimization for the SE, IMO.

I have consistently less success with Yahoo optimization than I do with Google ... but when I check Y's results I don't find them terribly irrelevant for searches in my niches - though clearly Google and I see more eye to eye on what sites are worthy of the top 5. ;-0 But most of our competitors are as relevant as we are.

I don't use Yahoo for much outside business, but what searches I do there look reasonable to me. I think that in most niches there are far more sites that are deserving of the top 10 than can fit there ... so it comes down to that art and skill set we call SEO.

Cheers, MJ

Perfectly explained mjTylor! How their algo works and how good or bad their results might be, are two different things.

By the way: if you wish to improve your rankings in Yahoo, put more rich and relevant content into your site. I'm sure this won't affect your Google rankings.

Yahoo seems to be putting a very heavy emphasis on domains. I registered a domain recently and it was ranking 5th for the one-word keyphrase within 24 hours. There was nothing on the domain - just a holding page which said "This domain has been registered" and it ranked purely because the domain was [keyphrase].org.
