Default Yaaaahhh Boooooo

I just don't understand Yahoo. I have been redesigning our site, with the help of DaK, my trusty webmaster, and am just baffled at the results we get in Yahoo. We build what we think are SE friendly pages with lots of content and never seem to gain any ground in Yahoo. What are we doing wrong? I thought we were making some ground when we held the #11 position for our most common term "curtain rods" which we currently hold at #2 on Google. Now it takes a dump to 40 something. Yes, I know Google is the top dog but Yahoo clicks are fine with me also. Any thoughts as to what me might be doing wrong?

Thanks,
Dave

What else are you doing to help your seo, link building, internal linking etc. Clean coded sites and content only go so far. Google is definitely an accomplishment to be proud of though! I think search engines are there to drive us webmasters crazy with watching placement. LOL

Hey, thanks for the quick response. We are doing all of the things you mentioned. I keep giving it a crack and wait for the results, then nothing in Yahoo. Google is good to us and we are very happy with our results there. Just wasn't sure if anything jumps out and says, this guy is an idiot, can you believe he's doing that.

You're right, going crazy one day at a time.

Talking Re: Yaaaahhh Boooooo

I know so many SEO’s and web designers that struggle with SERP’s. Of course we want our site up at the top. One of the hardest obstacles we encounter is the difficulty of getting NEW sites listed well in the search engines. Age of your domain plays a large part in SEO. Building up back links also plays a significant role.

My suggestion is to build back links and to improve your keyword density. You keep these areas strong, and you will see a slow and steady increase in the search engines. Everyone sees an unexplained drop in rankings from time to time, but don’t get too excited.

We try not to “put all of our eggs in one basket” and get a more broad keyword focus. We would rather play in the top 10 positions for 5 keywords, then the first position for 1 keyword. Just in case of those unexplained drops! Just my 2-cents worth!

This sounds plausible at first sight. However, I'd like to challenge this on the basis of pure logic.

I think that very much depends on the value/revenue you achieve with a #1 position rather than #7, #8, #9 or #10.

Let say, a single #1 brings you ten fold the revenue of a single #9 for the same keyword. Let's say you can budget 15% of your revenue for marketing and you only need 12% to get that particular number one position. Now having this extra marketing budget allows you to invest into a second keyword to bring it to number one as well. That allows you to broaden your keyword base. And remember it is 3% of ten times the revenue in the first place.

Lets say you are getting $1,000/mo from the 5 keyword at #9. That means you can spend 5 * $150 = $650 on building more links and increase the keywords position. If you were #1 and this keyword would bring $10,000 and contribute $1,500 to the marketing budget. That way you would spend $1,200 to hold the position and have $300 extra to build for a new keyword. And off course you would make twice the revenue and hopefully more than double the profit.

I'm not saying you should not broaden your base, but you might want to focus on a single keyword and or target market until it gets too expensive to improve, then go for the next one. And while focusing on a single keyword, I'm sure you'll pick up 5 that are in the first ten more or less by accident.

Thumbs up Re: Yaaaahhh Boooooo

You have a very good point. I completely agree with what you are saying. I just don’t want to spend time and money for just one word. All of that time and money can be gone in an instant with no explanation from the search engines.

I have worked with companies who put all their money in one arena and if it failed they had to start from scratch. I like running several programs, tracking each one, and comparing results. If one fails you still are working on others. This is the same way I optimize my sites. I think we are on the same page! Good Post!

Just keep on improving your site and do what you are doing. Don't worry about yahoo. Yahoo is slow to update. Google has an almost daily data push and update of internal page rank. It's possible to see results climb fast on google where yahoo can take a few months.

There was some kind of update on yahoo yesterday morning and there is some noise on webmasterworld about it.

It's not clear if it's an update or just some testing on some datacenters. Anyone else see anything?

Yahoo reports an update http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000461.html but it appears that it was rolled back.
