Is it worthwhile to pay for submission to the Yahoo directory?

Only if you really believe that your site is relevant to search terms, run it by www.sitereportcard.com first to check it's links etc. Beware of renewal e-mails charging the same fee for the following years. Spammers.

Yes, if your site is both entertaining and functional and 'On Topic' then it can be money well spent. But Google Directory is free and so is DMOZ

If you website is NEW and it does not have any
PR. or few incomming links, then you can get a Yahoo Directory listing for one year.

It will give you a jump start.
