Default Do I need to pay Yahoo?

Hi experts!
Everything I have read indicates that I have to pay Yahoo (around £200/year?) to have a commercial site listed with them. However, my e-commerce site http://www.furthrows.com appears high in the listings on certain keyphrases when I do a search. Does this imply that I don't need to pay the fees? My UK site http://www.furthrows.co.uk doesn't appear at all. Any guidance would be appreciated.

You do not for any reason need to pay Yahoo to be indexed in their search engine. You can pay for the yahoo directory, but you definitely don't have to pay to be included in the search index. All you need is links into your site and Yahoo will pick you up. You are already indexed in Yahoo so don't worry about it.

Default Thanks

Hi jestep,

Thanks for your response, it's very helpful. Now I realise that there is a difference between Yahoo SE and Yahoo directory. I was obviously confused between the 2. Perhaps it is paying to be included in Yahoo directory that helps with ranking of a site.

Thanks again, it's good to be have a forum where people are not only helpful but know what they are talking about.

Yes it can help - after all it is a link to your site! But only you know whether it's worth $299 for that link. For big commercial sites, yeah, there's no question - they should do it. But for a little guy, there might be more effective ways to spend the money - especially since it's a yearly and not a one-time fee.

I just reread your original post and I didn’t catch before that the front pages for both your two sites are identical – that could be causing you problems. I’d suggest you do a search here on duplicate content – we tend to discuss it a lot! Others before have dealt with wanting both a .co.uk and .com sites to rank well.

If you want in Y! index an easy way is to

1. Start a blog, say blogger.com
2. Host the blog on your site not blogger.com
3. In the blog make sure you have a link to your profile on Blogger.com
4. Add your atom feed generated by blogger.com to your "My Yahoo" account
5. Yahoo will come instantly and crawl your blog, well its a different bot nonetheless it will get the other web bots to your index in a few days.
6. Add links to your blog and update it every couple of days.
7. As long as you update your blog with atleast 50 words or so. Yahoo will index it more often. Slurp likes fresh content.

Thats all there is to it. Of course going out and getting quality links is the other way. Yahoo Directory wont get your site crawled. Yahoo Search submit will but umm I dont for organics listings

I have had 2 clients go with paid YAHOO inclusion. It doesn't stop at inclusion, does it?

Face it.

SERPs are for Sale, just about everywhere!
