My first #1 Ranking in Yahoo!!
I needed to tell someone:)
I was pleasently surprised yesterday by seeing a good keyword phrase in my Log Files that I never saw before. I checked in Google but I was no where!
So, just for fun, I plugged it into a yahoo search and there I was!! Right on top of the SERP.
I think I might throw a party! I haven't worried about Yahoo up to now. I've been concentrating on Google.
Something interesting I did notice. The phrase was was both in my Title and URL...
And it's actually a page that I took out of my link structure months ago... it can't be reached by my main website... and it doesn't connect to any of my other pages... I forgot all about it... And it has a PR3 in Google... Strange.
I probably should reincorporate it back into my website...
New approach to SEO. Set up a page, forget about it, and give it some time:)

zoasterboy: You might be thinking of PPC or something, but Google doesn't really seem to favor sites that somehow pay them (and they have no paid inclusion program).
Except for maybe one way I have noticed... if I am dumping $300-1000/day on Adwords, I can modify something visibly different on the point-to page daily, and it is *always* cached and indexed within hours.
And I suppose another way is, there's a good bit of weight placed on current traffic in Google's algorithm, such that if your Alexa rank or just general site hits go through the sky, whether you paid for it, got a good incoming-exchange, or just were in the right place at the right time, you can bounce up (or down) pretty quickly.
Back on thread, I think the "fugetaboudit" rationale is somewhat true but is partly psychological. All the SEO people I know, me included, hit our special pet projects 10x a day, and after a while it seems like it's been forever and ever since we've gotten an index update or moved in rankings, etc - but the sites I care least about, I look at less, and they can surprise you months later sometimes.
So CONGRATS on a #1 - people say it comes and goes, blah blah - but even if this is just your 15 click-its of fame, it beats never hitting the top rankings at all!

we had the same on msn
I don't know if anybody cares about msnsearch here ;-) - I used to have the same "luck" on msn some time ago, a 3 yr old page with no graphics on it anymore and even little content was indexed #3 for a very popular keyword. Must be strange algorythms they are using...

Hi Matt, congrats on your #1 page status, that has to be a nice surprise.
Our Google vs. Yahoo results have flip-flopped - we used to be #3 and 4 on Google for our target keywords and phrases and now we're not even in the top 30. We now rank on page one of Yahoo for all of our target keywords and phrases, normally in the top 5. This was the opposite just 6 months ago...
(Personally, I don't use Google as much since the organic results tend to be link farm directories.)

mlevenhagen,
Congratulations...
It does take hard work, knowledge and difinitive channeled logic to get there...
Single keywords are the toughest - Get those 2s and 3s though... If you know what you are doing... It can be done!
Congrats again!

You are right. even we are also high ranked with few and most popular keywords
life insurance in MSN
mobile zone http://yahoo.com and http://search.msn.com
we are at top
but in google we are no where with these keywords, so what the thing or alogrithm does google do to rank sites.
Need to optimize my sites more...

webiff,
One of the things you need to look at is who you are competing with at the top of the results...
If you punch in "life insurance" in a Google search, you are up against companies with 1000s of inbound links and really high PR (Aetna - PR7 - 110,000 IBLs) (Metlife - PR7) (New York Life - PR7)..... that will be tough. That'll take a lot of work. It's not impossible, but difficult.
So you will have a real hard time with Google for "life insurance" because of what you are up against... you would have a better chance with something obscure like "Survivorship Whole Life" or something...
Mobile Zone should be a little easier to crack, but still will take some work.
You need to work on your linking strategies (get some links from high PR sites), try working in keyword rich anchor text with your links (especially internally), keyword in your meta tags... there is a lot of things...
Do some keyword research. Try to find keywords and phrases a lot of people are searching for, but have little competition at the top of the SERPs.
Do some searches through out the Google Threads here at WPW... you'll learn a lot that way and ask specific questions... it takes a long time to figure out how to do the SEO stuff. It will always be a challenge. The environment is always changing (algos).
Just keep testing, learning, take notes, hang out in this forum and work hard.
BTW, Your sites look nice.

Matt, yes it feels fantastic, Well done! Now here is something that has totally confused me.
www.resultsifter.com It is a Yahoo powered SE, well not what I would class as a real SE, but if you search my keyword which is Right to Buy according to this my site is number one. Now on Yahoo UK & Ireland I am on page one (2 years now)at number 9, so where are they getting their positioning from?
The guy who is spending up to $1,000 per day on ad words - PM me, let's go through this and save you some money!

Sometimes Yahoo is just providing the index and the Algorithms can be different... Or Resultsifter.com might only be using part of the index so that could affect the results dramatically...

Hi, mlevenhagen,
Congratulations on your first #1! I know I was really excited when I found my first #1s!
I try to code, as best as I can, according to W3C standards. I also use only text editors, no WYSIWYGs.
As I result I get consistenly very high rankings
in Yahoo, AllTheWeb and AltaVista.
