I'm perplexed as to what makes Yahoo tick. My most recent web documentary http://www.organtransplants.org was a Yahoo Pick, is in the Yahoo directory and ranks in the top 10 or 15 on Google for key terms like organ donation or organ transplants. However, it's barely on the radar of Yahoo search. Any suggestions.

Hi,
I run a 200 page website that has been around for many years and was very well ranked for all it's keywords. Then it was offline for about 6 months and all but fell out of all the search engines rankings specifically Yahoo and Google. Well, I got the site back up a little over a month ago. Heres the scenario - Google is still the highest referring SE but the website doesn't even show up for its main keyword. I get a lot of traffic through related keywords appearing in the page content. Yahoo, within 15 days I had regained my old ranking position on Yahoo for the main keyword which is at the bottom of page 1. But the traffic is still almost half of Google's. I have no directory listing, no page rank or link backs anymore...well very few anyway... I think Yahoo's getting bigger and faster than Google and very soon, unless... Google's got something discreetly stuck up up it's sleeve as it usually does. Also, Google used to be a good friend and I haven't given up hope on it. |

I have experienced some weeks after Yahoo dropped Google that all my main sites with Google PR5 and heavy traffic dropped out of Yahoo, but to my surprise some of my secondary sites with no much traffic and hardly any links to it, not maximised for keywords now achieved first 10 placements in Yahoo. To me it looks like that Yahoo randomly picked some sites regardless popularity .

Hi Maximilian, We have a small crystal shop and have been trying to succeed with Google and Yahoo for years. While Google keeps sending us trafic through less important keywords, we've experienced an unexpected increase from Yahoo in the last few weeks on both "difficult" and less frequented keywords. We have been optimizing (in our view) equally well for both, but it seemed as if Yahoo has suddenly decided that we are "for real". Until I saw your post, I thought we have finally figured it out, but now I see that it's probably caused by some recent change of policies. My customers and myself definitely get better rankings in Yahoo and I am convinced our sales result from that as well - I tracked it.
Earlier this year during the SEO congress there was an interview held with one of the Search managers at Yahoo (Jon Glick) about the new search engine etc. I quote one question and answer (which in my opinion might have a lot to do with what your are seeing) from this article: "o Mike: On the subject of meta data, let me just go off at a little tangent here. Tim [Mayer] mentioned to me yesterday that meta keywords are back again! After all that time away, now they're alive and well at Yahoo! search... o Jon: Yes we do use meta keywords. So let me touch on meta tags real fast. We index the meta description tag. It counts similar to body text. It's also a good fallback for us if there's no text on the page for us to lift an abstract to show to users. It won't always be used because we prefer to have the users search terms in what we show. So if we find those in the body text we're going to show that so that people can see a little snippet of what they're going to see when they land on that page. Other meta tags we deal with are things like the noindex, nofollow, nocache we respect those. For the meta keywords tag... well, originally it was a good idea. To me it's a great idea which unfortunately went wrong because its so heavily spammed. It's like, the people who knew how to use it, also knew how to abuse it! What we use it for right now is... I'd explain it as match and not rank. Let me give a better description of what that really means. Obviously, for a page to show up for a users query, it has to contain all the terms that the user types, either on the page, through the meta data, or anchor text in a link. So, if you have a product which is frequently misspelled. If you're located in one community, but do business in several surrounding communities, having the names for those communities or those alternate spellings in your meta keywords tag means that your page is now a candidate to show up in that search. That doesn't say that it'll rank, but at least it's considered. Whereas, if those words never appear then it can't be considered. http://www.e-marketing-news.co.uk/april_2004.html I would like to highlight a couple of points about the keyword tag discussion in the article: Jon Glick elaborates on 3 features of the keyword tag in the next paragraphs: 1) He is emphatic that the keywords in the tag are of relevence only to matching enquiries not to any measure of page ranking. 2) Phrases should be seperated with commas. 3) Over long strings of words will raise a red flag Quote:

I noticed an fairly good increase on one of my sites. almost all traffic on that site comes from Yahoo (Google seems to fairly much ignore it).
Because of most traffic coming from Y!, I also noticed another weird thing. It seems my rankings are going up and down with fairly regular intervals. If I look at a specific keyword in my logs, sometimes this word ranks #2 but a few days later it is nowhere to be found. This cycle seems to happen about every 2 weeks or so. This triggered a thought and I was hopnig for some feedback on this; Would search engines (and searchers) benefit from SERPS that cycle ? It always seemed unfair to me that the big sites, for the important keywords ALWAYS show up high, while new comers struggle to get a good ranking. This is not good news for searchers as the old boys are often much more expensive then newcomers (I'm refering to markets like domain name registration now.. Networksolutions - $35/y - we $7.95/y - but they have been around for years. I'd rather find me !). That system of almost static listings makes the big boys richer and the choice for the searcher smaller. How about an algo that cycles through a selection of good quality sites ? Everyone is then better off (except the big boys but they can handle it). The cycles would mean that someone now ranking on page 4 would next week rank on page 1 for a few days at least ? Any thoughts ? |

Hello everyone,
I dont post often enough but this post and another had me slapping the keys... On the Yahoo Google debate.. Are you as webmasters seos attuned to which search engine drives traffic and which one drives buyers ??? Would your clients care who you prefer ??? None of mine do...they prefer I know how to drive what they're looking for ...visits or buyers.. I looked at google about two months ago looking for some title tag clues...while I was there I noticed google still had meta description tags but no meta keywords... This was in the page source for the google groups, news, images etc. I went tonight and those meta description tags bit the dust, removed from the coding, gone. So that tends to lead me to believe google dumped them both for themselves and as for having any relevancy. ( This will be a joy explaining to clients ) Here is something else I noticed googlebot is taking the first path to text it sees and following that direction to make it's crawl..left to rightm top to bottom or down and up, left to right. I spent the weekend putting a space above my menu on the left hand sde of my pages so the bot would crawl left to right to pick up my Heading tags. I have seen frontpage listings with the meta description in the results listing, site links from left hand nav in the results listing, and body content in the results listings for the same keyword terms. Googles last update seemed to be a spam reduction attempt to appease investors in their IPO.. their time to index sites new to the web has moved over two months typically closer to three, and yet yahoo has a sign up saying "we are two weeks behind in our indexing" As far as yahoo using meta keywords for content matching...from what I learned it was always that way to begin with..if the keywords weren't in your body content they did not belong in the metas...If they were in the metas and not in the content you got dinged a notch for it...I still think it holds true and yahoo in a way is saying that is the case. Maybe its a corp culture switch...google becomes the next microsoft..shutting its doors to all the prying eyes....yahoo becomes google opens the doors wide open, ...microsoft becomes linux .....This is too deep for me to continue on with ... I always felt it better to spread the pages across as many SEs and directories as possible that are of signifigance...those listings are one way links back to your site most times...if I can get one targted buyer from splat search to hit a clients site and make a purchase, its still profit in their pocket.. In the theme of the election...one vote does count....one buying customer from any search engine or directory counts too...did you know for example dogpile, and aol are better search engines to market to kids with ???
