email notifications of replies
Would love to see an option to check "if we want to be emailed of reply's to any given forum/thread". This is really, really helpful in other forums I've visited.
THANK you for a great job at WebProWorld :)

Hi Frank,
You know you can click the "Watch this topic" link at the bottom of any thread if you wish to receive email notifications. Unfortunately, you can't set a whole forum to work in the same way... I'd quite like that particular facility myself! LOL!! :o)
Cheers for the compliments, I'm sure everyone here at WPW appreciates such positive feedback!

But you can't click that until after a post has been posted. When you've clicked to turn it on, and you make a reply, it gets turned off again so, unless you remember to turn it on again, that's it.
Most forums have the option to turn it on while the post is being written, and some have a global setting in the profile. The system here is awkward and doesn't work well.
Correction:
I've just seen that this is a phpBB forum, which does have the global user option of receiving email notifications of replies to all posts. It also has the the option of setting it when writing the post. They've been removed.

I agree PhilC, it's far from ideal. I would personally like all threads that I post to be automatically set to 'Watch'. I have a feeling that some members were unaware that if they posted to a thread they would get email notifications.. and so consequently complained that they were receiving unsolicited emails from WPW. This has resulted in the current setup, where we have to consciously set a topic to watch, if we wish to be notified of replies.
The facility to be notified of replies should ideally be set in the Post Reply box. I'm not the programmer here... but I can pass on your comments.

not sure what I did right
Hmm I am not sure what I did right, but I get auto emailed for any new postings if I answered any of em. It's a real blessing.

It may be an annoyance, but just think of the benefits guys! With the amount of discussions you are involved in around the forums on the net, you would be spending all your day reading & replying to them, and your email boxes would be full.
Behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining.

Aye, but the alternative to reading posts here is that we have to work!

email notification
Is there a place I can tell it to email me when I get a reply to one of my posts? I don't see it when creating a new post.

David,
You can watch a topic for replies by clicking the link at the bottom of every thread that says "Watch this topic for replies"
Hope that helps!

Why isn't this allowed to automate? I mean, I know phpBB has in it to be able to define to automatically watch the topics I posted to or started.
Now I have to remember each time to click "watch"?

Brittany - I was just coming in here to post about a quirk in this part of the board and saw this topic was already created.
There is a bug in this. When you have already clicked on the link to "watch topic", you will get notifications. No problem there.
But if you reply to the topic, then the flag for watch topic gets reset. In other words, you have to remember to go and click on the "watch topic" link again.
This is not standard for the phpBB software...that flag usually stays set until you specifically click on "Stop watching this topic".
But another thing that was removed from the User Control Panel is the toggle for "Automatically Watch topics that you reply to". This is a nice feature to have. Right now, if you reply to a topic then you still have to click on that link to watch it.
Heck...hehehehe....since I editted this to include the above paragraph, the darn flag got reset again. Help !!!!!! ;0)

This topic was brought up not so long ago... and I must confess to offering a similar response to that of Brittany's i.e. that a visitor could manually set the link at the base of a post to "Watch for replies". However, I did partially redeem myself later in the thread (if you read it)... I have a feeling that the decision to remove the 'global setting' for email notifications was due to members complaining about receiving 'so-called' spam emails from WPW.
So I think handing the responsibility for email notifications back to the user was one way for WPW to be shown not to be responsible for any unsolicited emails. But as Ronnie says, if there was still the option to set this in the User Control Panel, each individual would have control over how their email notifications were handled.

I personally think the present setup is a pain.
phpBB was designed to set this option both globally and on a topic by topic basis. If you do not want your box filling up, then it is an easy Profile option change. If you do not want a particular topic filling up your box, then again it is an easy click on a link to "unsubscribe" from that thread.
As it stands right now, all those options have been stripped from your control over them and choosing whether or not you want the notifications. It is basically setting the default of NO WATCH for you.
Personally I would like to have it put back to the way it was originally set up. If I want to participate in a thread and keep up to date on new posts, and reply in return...I have to continually click the Watch Topic to continue receiving those notifications.
The pages here load so slowly in the first place and I am on DSL to boot. But after I post, I have to go back into the thread and find that button to click on to continue watching the topic. When I first noticed this happening, I was beginning to wonder if it was actually setting at all. So I was going back (yet one more time) to make sure it was set.
I see no benefit in this what so ever, nor do I see a silver lining....there is a dark cloud there though and I can see it.

Hmm!
I came to this thread to find out how/where I could set it up so that I could automatically be emailed when someone post to the thread I have contributed to - but seems like this phpbb function has been switched off!
I would say that it is better with this function on! The way it is set up now is not very convenient! I have to remember to click "watch this topic" every time! Which I usually forget to do - even if you do remember it - it's time consuming.

On other phpbb forums you could switch this off at "Edit your profile" - if it bothers you.
