Default Changes Explained

Now that the forum is moved I wanted to put together a list of some of the changes/features that you may or may not have noticed.

You will notice a new group of links near the top of every page. There are lots of cool things in here now. Here are some of the details:

From the top:

User CP link. User CP is the User Control Panel. From here you have quick access to everything about your account. You can edit your signature, profile, options for how you use/view the forum etc.

You also have your Private Messages section here - which is a bit more advanced than our old one. You can list/manage any and all of your subscribed threads here too. We have a buddy/ignore system too in this are - so add your friends to keep better track of each other.

Lots of goodies in User CP. Click around, try them out.

The FAQ in VB is much more comprehensive than our old forum. If you have a question about how anything works in VB, this is a good place to start. You can browse subjects by category or do a search.

Member List...well, lists our members. You can see people's home pages, join dates number of posts, last visit date and stuff like that. You can also sort the list by any header you like.

Calendar - our forum also now has a pretty robust calendar. You'll see members b-days on there too. You can add your own notes and events -- good stuff.

New Posts is what it says. If you get a ton of results, hop over a couple of tabs to Quick Links and Mark Forums as read. Then you should just start seeing new stuff as it goes up in your new posts tab. I use this one a lot.

Search is search, it's just better and faster than the old one.

Quick Links - lots of good stuff in there. You can click and get all of Today's Posts, Mark all the Forums Read, open your Buddy List, check your profile, see who's online -- lots of handy info in Quick Links.

Last, you can log out -- but why would you do that?

In the Threads:
You have lots of new options inside the threads too. In the green bar right over the first thread you'll see some new options.

Thread Tools - From this tab you can show a print version, email the page to someone or subscribe to the thread. If you reply to a thread you should automatically be subscribed to a thread, but this is another spot where you can subscribe to a thread without posting in it.

Search This Thread - basically thread level search with full advanced search options if you need them. I find this to be a very handy feature.

Rate Thread - if you like the thread, let everybody know. This is a 1 to 5 star rating for the thread that will display next to its name in the thread list.

Display Modes - From here you can change the way you view the thread - as in linear, threaded or hybrid mode.

Post Level:
You can do some new stuff in the posts as well. The icon is part of the much-debated reputation system. If you want to leave someone a vote on their reputation for a really good (or bad) post, this is where you do it.

Simply click the icon and the window that pops up will ask you if you approve or disapprove and ask you for your comments. Please do leave a brief explanation of your vote -- your responses and comments are anonymous, so you don't have to worry about that. It is nice to know what people did and didn't like about your post though.

The icon is the report post. The report post feature is used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts. If you find something that needs to be brought to our attention, hit this button and all the alarms will go off in admin/mod-land.

Quote - Quote is quote. nothing really new about this. The button next to it is neat though. If you want to quote multiple posts in your reply you can use the new Multi Quote button -- this is a great new feature.

The last button on your post interface is the quick reply button . Hit that to go directly to a reply interface. The quick reply interface also appear at the bottom of every thread.

That's a little info on some of your new features. Check them out and see what you think. There are lots of other little tweaks and changes on the way, and I'll try to get you details posted ASAP when they go in.

Thanks,

-Mike
