I have the same situation.
I received negative rep rank from an individual that wanted to start a flame war because we disagreed. I left the thread, and choose not fan the flames, only to be given a negative rep-rank.
Is there any way to dispute this?

netprowler & villageloop...

If you go to your "User CP" the rep you receive is linked to the post you received it for.

My suggestion is to read the rep comments and revisit your post(s). The more posts that you make that other members find interesting, helpful, useful, etc., the more likely it is that you'll receive positive rep.

And no, you cannot "dispute" rep you have been given.

Dave

Thanks Dave. The User CP is a new thing I checked after you pointed out. It is odd that anyone who finds your suggestion at variance with theirs can cast a negative vote and make you look "red" for the entire world. It can really sap the overall interest.

Thanks Dave,

I see that I am now back to green.
That is all that I wanted. I dont have to have a high rep rank, but at least not negative.
I wish I could spend more time on the forums but my reality doesn't allow it. It is enough just reading through all of the great content here. Sometimes it is difficult to add to it. Although it hurts to get negative that is unwarranted.

FYI
Yesterday, after I received a positive rep rank. The same user that was harassing me last month, went back in and gave me another negative. (maybe he is following me now?)
I have not communicated or done anything with regards to the post or the user since this all happened. This forum really doesnt need any trolls and I know a lot is done to keep them at bay. I just wish there was a way to report a user.
Based upon what I have seen written by this individual, I am sure I can't be the only victim on here.
Is there a way to report an abusive user?

@netprowler... Basically, that's how it works. Any forum member is able to "disapprove" of a post that is made. At the same time, any member is able to "approve" of a a post that is made.

@villageloop... Anytime you believe that another member is being "abusive" or otherwise violating the forum rules you can use the "Report Post" function if it is a post, or PM an administrator (Rah) or mod with the details.

Personally, I don't consider "disapproving" of a post(s) as being abusive. While I personally choose to believe that members "approve" and "disapprove" for the "right" reasons I also realize they can do so for a reason(s) of their own choosing.

Dave

I like giving credit where credit is due, such as to the following people:

weegillis, ctabuk, webnauts, deepsand, jordanMcClements, crankydave, tubby and rah.

Thank you to all of the above people for helping me with various elements of website design, Google AdSense, SEO and forum tips, among other topics.

Steph-

I agree, that 20 rep points before being able to repeat seems very limiting. There are a number of people here that I have given reps to, for what I considered to be outstanding advice, helpfulness, or knowledge. Unfortunately, in the short time I've been here, I can't name twenty different individuals in that group.

Consequently, a particularly good post by one of them will garner no rep from me, until I can find several more posts that I consider noteworthy. However, I do understand the rationale behind it. I just feel that perhaps ten or so might be a more realistic number.

Nonetheless, I've checked my in-box, and it seems that the Admin's email, where they were undoubtedly seeking my wise counsel on this issue, must have gotten lost in transit.

Doc,

I couldn't have said that better myself! About your wise counsel - maybe you can resend it. There have been all kinds of adjustments and upgrades, etc, to the forum. Minor tweaks that may not be noticed unless you're involved with them, etc.

I don't want to sound secretive. One of them was not being able to preview posts, which has since been fixed.

I'm sure that if you sent the mods a message, it was accidentally overlooked. (Or else!) LOL

Actually, he was joking, and saying the opposite. That he was 'missing' an email from the admin, asking for his wise counsel.

See, Steph?

However, I have noticed a few changes made recently, prompted by suggestions. Who knows?

Steph, you can always dump red rep on people that obviously deserve it to free you up to give green where you feel it is needed.. That also counts in your 20 reps between repping the same person again..

Agreed. Oftentimes I find myself dropping red for stupid or misleading posts. Obviously some people don;t like it, but oh well, thats my system of letting newbies 'see those posters coming'.

You're welcome and thank you, too! I'd better go read what's being said about me.

You deserve the compliments. I'm declining to say anything about the flame wars comment in an effort to deflect any possible oncoming ones.

Oh, I see. Well, I'm not as experienced as the rest of you are in deciding what's misleading or wrong. If it's wrong, I hope someone corrects it right away, aside from giving a red mark.

You will find that many of the more experinced members (others too) are generally pretty good about questioning or defusing questionable or misleading statements. Sometimes quite eloquently, other times not.

Given time, and your own experiences/research/etc. you'll get the feel for what to put stock in.

I'm learning the ropes. Right now, I'm trying to figure out where to read the comments made about me. Maybe I should leave well enough alone. No one will want ME to get mad!! (joke, just in case that gets misread).

Anyhooo...I really don't see where all the emotion comes from on the issue. I see Rep mostly as a tool to indicate to visitors/viewers the perceived reliability of posters.

Sticks n stones, and all that....

So if I want to see what's been said, I have to check it more regularly. Go figure!

But how do you thank people when they say something nice and who else gets to see these fantastic reputation remarks?

Steph

Steph-

Answering only for myself, I generally find a way to return the rep. As it happens, those that I have received happen to come from people whose opinions I've learned to respect here, so that's not hard. I don't think a thank-you PM would be out of place, but neither would I think it necessary.

As I said earlier, I think the most valuable use of the rep system is to give the viewers a notion of the perceived credibility of the poster. As such, I think it takes on less of a social impact than some seem to think.

I don't think that anyone else can see them, save perhaps mods and admin.

lol... you can thank them in kind if you like. You cand send a PM and say "thank you" if you like too.

Each member sees their own rep comments. That's it.

Dave

BTW... Doc... did you get my reply to your PM?

The only person that can see the rep comments is the person getting them.. And only a few of us actually sign our names to them.. But we don't sign them because we want thanks

Also, about the red rep.. Seriously.. There are bleeding idiots telling people that simply don't know any better what to do.. And we can't all be here all the time to set things right.. The red rep helps let the new people know not so much who to listen to, but most definitely who to ignore..

I think that the information I can depend on is with people with a lot of points.

Yes I did, Dave, but due to my sporadic bouts of alzheimers, I failed to respond. Please check your PMs (before you forget. This may be contagious!)

Hi, Doc,

I'm beginning to think that it's probably best to just thank the person right in the reply. I don't post enough to sit here and count out 20 rep points!

Often true, I think, Steph. However, since I'm relatively ignorant on much of what is discussed here, I look a lot at the responses to posts of newbies by the established members, too.

Wouldn't want to miss a pearl of wisdom, just because it came from a newbie, right?

If nothing else, this has really given me a great laugh! If you really had alzheimers, how would you remember how to spell it?

Doc,

You're talking about you and me! No, I wouldn't want to miss any pearls of wisdom!

I may soon have to install a seatbelt on my computer chair so I don't fall off it from laughing.

Have a good day, everybody! I have to leave for a while.

Steph

I'm all in favor of a system that affords random ascent or decline based on reader votes, especially where one can attract reputation faster by means of quality posts than by means of post count alone. Well, I guess it's a little bit lame to equate the two.

The real question is not in the voting itself, but in who has been given a vote and what tethering is placed upon their ya or nay.

I'm not certain if the post count does make a difference, but as CD is on 3,999 we will see.
